why would we design school zones to look safe and attractive with fun mobility for students when we can have this instead?!?!?

A city of drivers expands, rapidly and inevitably, into sprawl.

A city of pedestrians, cyclists, and transit-users settles gradually and elegantly into itself.

This week we're collabing with the co-hosts of @thewaroncars.bsky.social to chat about how pro-car propaganda works, its history, and how it shows up in our politics today, especially in this year's NYC mayor's race! www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN-e...

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. The issue is around Class 3 e-bikes, and the terminology bleed that causes a lot of people to conflate electric mopeds with e-bikes. Expecting enforcement officers to know this nuance is also a lost cause right now.
davidzipper.bsky.social
My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

Terrible story but great reporting by Laura Penington of the Denver Post:
- "A man died... after being hit by the driver of a van while riding his bike"
- "the driver struck him from behind"

And some extra context that you rarely ever see:
- "There are no bike lanes along that stretch of road"

Hoboken, NJ has seen zero pedestrian fatalities in 8 years since implementing universal daylighting. This proven approach will make Sunset Park's intersections, and those across NYC, safer for all. @nycspeakeradams.bsky.social, please call Intro 1138 to a vote now.

Probably because they all carry guns on the job and train to use them, while a very small minority train on and use bikes for work. Ditto with their usually thorough knowledge of cars. E-bikes and … those other vehicles are a somewhat understandable learning curve, but it has to happen!

this. We ask literally everyone to bend over backwards for cars, yet cars are treated like this glass vase that will shatter if you make modifications to the world to slow them down.
tomflood.bsky.social
We ask everyone outside of the car to be safe so that drivers can be dangerous.

That’s the entirety of our approach to road safety.

This weekend we debuted our Tiny Super Sidewalk on Canal Street!

Canal is one of the most dangerous streets in Manhattan, and there's not enough space for the huge number of pedestrians. But both of these problems can be solved by extending the sidewalks!

The design of the new Maliebaan intersection in Utrecht, which connects two bicycle streets on the main cycle route from the Central Station to the University area, is slowly taking shape.

✅more space for active travel and greenery
❌traffic lights will be removed for better traffic flow

Collage of four photos showing the work on the new intersection connecting Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat in Utrecht. The shape of the new intersection is slowly becoming visible. During the work, car traffic will be one-way only, but bicycle traffic will be allowed in both directions.

Spent five years in Paris, left 15 or so years ago. The photographs Brent posts of Paris are astonishing and hopeful.

Gritty, grey side streets for cars are now green and lively with people. Bicycle lanes on rue de Rivoli?? The only time I saw bicycles on it was the finish of the Tour de France.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was making it seem perfectly normal to assume that anyone over the age of 16 has the ability to get behind the wheel of a 2-ton vehicle and safely navigate public roads on a daily basis.

You can be the safest, most attentive driver in the world and still pose a massive risk to other road users. That’s because cars and car dependency are inherently dangerous.

This doesn’t mean you’re a bad person if you drive, but I do think that drivers should acknowledge their role in this system.

It has boggled my mind since I was sixteen that the moral hazard of driving does not weigh on literally everyone all the time.

I hate it! I don't want to risk ruining or ending someone's life just to get to the damn grocery store, but where I live, I have to, every day.

I still can’t believe these construction workers, when asked if they were building the bike lanes, told a mom and two kids (who super excited to see them built) that bike lanes are too expensive and the city shouldn’t be building them.🤨

They are literally selling out their livelihood! 🤦‍♂️

This is the main issue I have with so much of the coverage around e-bikes. It's not that there aren't legitimate issues. But there is a panic around e-bikes and crickets regarding the daily toll of cars. And that's because the harm of cars is just accepted. It's baked into our society.

The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.

My kid had his first close call on his way home from middle school today. He says all the cars were stopped for him at an intersection with flashing beacons, so he started across, but then a large truck swerved around and almost hit him. All the cars then honked at the driver.

This is perfect for a city like Jersey City. If we could make our neighborhoods truly safe for pedestrians and cyclists, we wouldn't need to rely on cars so much. Imagine getting to school or to the PATH station or to the bus this comfortably!
