Talk to me about better transit, clean air, clean oceans, more trees, leaders who do things, and hope. Oh and about New Jersey!

When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

My mother recently moved to Jersey City from the burbs. She likes it way more than she thought she would. Walking more, likes that she doesn't have to drive on highways, finding a lot of community and neighborhood activity.

This is perfect for a city like Jersey City. If we could make our neighborhoods truly safe for pedestrians and cyclists, we wouldn't need to rely on cars so much. Imagine getting to school or to the PATH station or to the bus this comfortably!

Look how wonderful Low Traffic Neighborhoods can be!

This is the Van Gogh Walk in Lambeth, London. This street is decades old but built for people first yet still has access for last block travel & emergency vehicles! @openplans.org @nyc.streetsblog.org @thewaroncars.bsky.social @nycdot.bsky.social

I'm not saying that e-bikes aren't a growing safety concern, but 2023 saw over 3,000 teenagers die plus another 200,000+ teenagers injured due to car crashes... and this problem has been around since before Rick Reilly was even born

In NJ when a driver injures or kills someone "by accident" - there is usually no consequence, or sometimes just like a traffic citation. Do insurance and state laws create the impression that individual actions and judgement are only about protecting themselves? How can we change this?

Red states already do what he wants, all he needs is to hurt blue states enough so they do the same. Hard to imagine red states abandoning trump even with economic woes.

Another example of ill-considered restrictions on e-bikes that makes no sense and will not protect anybody from anything. Unfortunately, we can probably expect more of this in the coming weeks and months in New Jersey, after the State Senate President declared war on e-bikes yesterday.

this is actually extraordinary and a lot of it's been done just by asking people to drive basically any car produced since 2007. almost no cars later than that (and some earlier) comply with ULEZ - it's not forcing everyone into a Tesla, it's incredibly basic improvements

For the first time ever, London has met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

When I became Mayor, we were told it would take 193 years. We did it 184 years earlier than expected.

Cleaner air means a healthier city and big savings for the NHS.

Jersey City needs this desperately. People are obsessed with how hard it is to find parking, but they don't like any of the real remedies to solve it. They only want to build more parking lots, as if we could ever build enough. Wah.

I cannot wait for those Christie-era coach buses to be phased out on the Hoboken 126 line. They make boarding so slow, difficult for accessibility, and uncomfortable. Glad to see more investment happening!

Let there be light! On the bike lane! (& sidewalks, and murals.) Today #JerseyCity lit the new streetlights in the once-forbidding areas under the overpass at 12th Street., over the Coles Street curb-raised lane & around the corner by the big murals. The bit under the 14th St. bridge is lit now too.

I sat for a long time and watched as the whole thing just... worked. People who need cars or need to be driven can still get where they need to go, but the people whose lives are made worse by other people's cars aren't exposed to too many of them. It's awesome.

Bright spots in US transit:

After opening its 3rd basic Bus Rapid Transit route for just $10M/mile, Albany didn't just exceed pre-pandemic ridership

They just set an all-time CDTA ridership record. Never been a better time for transit in Albany than now

BRT is the future

This is the definition of insanity. Deaths from car crashes are up, nationally and in NJ. Anyone who drives anywhere in NJ feels terror from these super speeders. And my mom will no longer drive on highways for fear.

Prices are extremely high, it's very noticeable to anyone who is looking at prices, and yet when I walk around town people are out and about shopping everywhere. is there a credit card crisis looming? seems like this money has to come from somewhere?

"It’s very tough,” said the manager of a popular vegetarian restaurant in Little India in Edison, NJ.
“Vendors are charging 50% more, and we have no option but to increase our menu prices. Customers feel it and yes, we risk losing business.”

Big surprise: New York is the only US city where most households don't have cars. But there are some big zero-car minorities across the river in New Jersey and in Washington, Boston and San Francisco. From new column with gift link: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
