I’ve come to the somewhat depressing realization that I don’t care for most fantasy.

The ones I do enjoy are easier on the supernatural. The ones that inundate the reader with ogres, elves, vampires, etc start losing me. My eyes lose focus as my ability to suspend disbelief wanes.

It’s too much.

I’m reading more now than at any point since college.

It’s heady but also frustrating. I’m both a voracious and extremely picky reader.

When I find an author I like, I will often read everything or try to read everything they wrote.

Trouble is, I’m so damned picky.

I've been reporting on the criminal justice system for over a decade and have lived in an authoritarian country overseas, but I've never seen anything like the police presence in ICE-occupied Memphis. Here's my dispatch: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I don’t know if this is just a limitation on my ability to suspend disbelief specifically, or a manifestation of my blend of neurodivergence.

I have trouble with what I consider “concept shows”.

Like, the one where everyone is blind or some major event happens and the whole show is about it.

Star Wars.

Little immigrant kid in the late 70s and it blew the doors off my mind.

Aliens.

Nobody thought it could top Alien and it kicked our arses.

Anything, Everywhere All at Once.

I have never felt more seen by a movie. I came out convinced the writer was ADHD. He is, dx post movie.

Too many people gloss over the fact that as antonymous people, kids can be right bastards.

The challenge: teach your kid to not be a right bastard without being a right bastard to them.

It's much harder than it sounds.
too many people want to have kids but don't want to parent
some significant part of this is just catch-all fear for “this is not the child I ordered” I think

The more I've learned about WW2, the more abhorrent the framing and whitewashing in the west has become.

The vast majority of german casualties were on the eastern front.

There was no german-soviet pact until right before the invasion of poland, when they signed a non-aggression deal.

Watched a video recently about haptic visuality and the feeling of realism in movies. It mentioned how modern movies often have flat lighting and shallow depth of focus to allow more options in post.

There are definitely times when it's good to pull focus on objects or faces.

But there are risks

I am guilty of not paying close attention to lyrics.

As a musician, this is a bit embarrassing at times.

However, in my defense, I have delayed audio processing, and I became accustomed to music in multiple languages.

All that said, it took me like 8 listens to get Sabrina Carpenters "Tears".

Capitalism.

Literally “you do all the work, I keep all the money.”

Wealth inequality is a feature, not a bug.
Wealth inequality is eating this country alive. Concentrated wealth is already endangering our democracy. Wealth doesn’t just beget more wealth — it begets more power.

It’s a vicious cycle that destroys our economy and democracy at the same time.

It’s maddening to include Soviet symbols when Russia is actively persecuting communists.

Folks are still participating in anticommunist, anti Soviet Union propaganda decades after the fall of the USSR.

One of the things that took me longer than I'd like to admit to wrap my head around, especially as I begun reading Marx & Lenin was: it's not just about class in the USA.

Those on the left have to understand, this country is founded on racism.

I am fond of the mute and block functions here.

Thank goodness.

One of the things reading Marxist theory has made me realize is: there is little value in arguing minutia in the "marketplace of ideas".

When someone here says something asinine, I can simply mute or block them. It's wonderful.

End stage capitalism.

It’s what happens when a beast requiring infinite growth smacks into the reality of finite resources and a fragile ecosystem.
I feel like one of the most underrated explanations for what's happening right now in global politics is that almost everyone has lost their minds.
