BREAKING🚨 Journalist Mario Guevara has officially been deported Friday from the United States back to his native El Salvador. This is a shameful erosion of press freedom in the U.S. — the first time that CPJ has documented this type of retaliation related to reporting.

ICE will deport Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained in retaliation for livestreaming a metro Atlanta protest, to El Salvador.

Mario had the right to work in the U.S. He and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press. bit.ly/4mQD2sy

So he was first arrested in DeKalb County while covering a protest. He was 1 of 30 people arrested & the only journalist. He was charged with pedestrian in the roadway, obstruction & a third misdo charge I can’t remember. All dropped.

at the ASG presser, I had mentioned in my question that Atlanta is the only city in the US where a journalist has been detained by ICE for doing his job. this is cruel and unnecessary and, plainly, a violation of human rights. it was the case months ago and still is the case now. fuck ICE.

Journalists should never have to fear government retaliation for reporting on government activity, and showing up to work shouldn't result in your family being torn apart.

Mario had the right to work and report in the U.S. at the time he was arrested for livestreaming a protest in June.

He was held for over 100 days in ICE detention, and he did not have the chance to say goodbye to his family in person before being deported.

Oscar Guevara said he and his younger brother will head to El Salvador to bring their father cameras, clothes and other personal belongings.

“At least he is not dead, and that’s the only thing giving us hope,” Oscar Guevara said in Spanish.

As a disabled person and journalist, such vile ableism makes me sick when I think of this article. I'm not linking, but you're welcome to Google.

Like Mahmoud Khalil's case, Mario Guevara's shows how courts will let the Trump administration use facially legal, bureaucratic mechanisms in unconstitutional ways. In a concurrence, Judge Kidd stresses that the First Amendment protects Guevara. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Student journalist Lucas Griffith faces trial today for covering a protest against the deportation of Ayman Soliman, who himself fled persecution for his journalism in Egypt.

Lucas did nothing wrong. This is a big deal and would be national news in normal times.
On trial for journalism in Kentucky.
