This article hits hard. Becoming a parent has really opened my eyes to how city design is connected with mental health. Raising children in the suburbs has nearly broken me. We open the front door-ghost town, a sea of hot pavement where the cars used to be.
Burned-Out Parents Need Better Public Spaces
To ease the burden on families, we need places to let the kids roam free.

What would it take to get public libraries to open at 9am rather than 10? This would be really helpful when your kids are up at 5am. @cityofedmonton.bsky.social

Today I paid tribute to someone who was a friend & inspiration to many of us, Darren Markland.

One of the best humans I’ve ever known.

In the shadow of the challenges our world faces today, we need more people like Darren.

Perhaps the best tribute we can pay is to be more like him. #abpoli

With the average new car at $50,000, let's look at the real costs of "freedom":

✅ Decades of debt
✅ Social isolation for every trip
✅ A leading cause of death & injury

Car dependency is a financially and socially crippling system, not a choice.

Just saw a car ad that tried to sell being stuck in traffic as quality family time. I’ve never felt more sure that we’re near the collapse of car culture.

I recently rode back home from University, and flying past gridlocked cars on 114st made my heart feel lifted again. Driving to and from work so regularly was crushing my soul, and I had to force myself to repeat mantras to find the motivation to get through the day.

A few months ago, a friend visited me in Utrecht. As we biked around to do daily errands, she kept saying, "This is like a dream. This is like a dream."

I do believe all cities the world over to soon come to their senses, limit car movement, and build a dream of safe, abundant streets for people.

No women, no safety

Women on bikes are the indicator species of a city’s cycling health.

If you don’t see many of us, it’s not about lack of interest — it’s about safety.

I spent and hour on the Tawatinâ Bridge today reading, resting and reflecting. It would have been so much nicer if I could have heard the sounds of the leaves in the wind and the birds in the sky. It was entirely drowned out by car noise. We sacrifice so much. It's such a shame. #nosiepollition #yeg

This road is about 21 metres wide. 17% of it is for pedestrians, 17% for cyclists, and 66% for cars.

No particular argument to make right now. I just think people should do calculations like this more often for roads in their city.

(Google Maps, right click, “measure distance”.)
