Please join us for the unveiling of the Budge Wilson Bookmark on Saturday, October 18th, at 3:00 p.m. on the Dalhousie University campus. This Project Bookmark Canada plaque honours Wilson's short story "The Leaving," a powerful narrative of a quiet act of rebellion and emancipation.
Invitation to the unveiling of the Budge Wilson Bookmark, with photos of Wilson, her book The Leaving, and Shirreff Hall. Unveiling at 3pm next to Shirreff Hall, followed by a reception in the Dalhousie Student Union Building.

"You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope."

Sometimes class prep is pretty fun, really. The ending of Persuasion never disappoints. 😍

“People do things like read or look at art because they want to be delighted, or be shocked by beauty, or for joy or surprise or to be taken outside of where they are. … How can we show people that more? I mean, of course we can. We need to keep trying.”

Live Like an Artist – Overwintering — Transactions with Beauty
— I’ve been thinking a lot about the process of overwintering, as I have brought in a couple of geraniums to spend the next season or so on my kitchen windowsill, and a hibiscus plant for another corn...

In 1901 Constance and Ellen Hill visited 'every place associated' with Jane Austen in order to better understand the 'great novelist'. Ellen made line drawings at each location!

“In those divine woodland solitudes one can hear the voice of one’s own soul—the voice of nature—the voice of God. I wish I might go there every day of my life—I always feel better after a stroll under those green arches where nature reveals herself in all her beauty.”
– L.M, Montgomery, 1893

Mirror, mirror, off the wall..Left on a residential curb for tomorrow’s garbage collection, it made for a neat photo of tonight’s spectacular sunset!
A round mirror with a dark grey frame is perched against a wooden telephone pole and its entire surface reflects tree silhouettes set against a deep fiery red and orange sunset.

“When you photograph anything, you’re a body holding a camera, thinking, feeling, working with your limitations in time and space. You’re an ethical being, looking, seeing. You have a soul. So that’s all in your image whether anyone takes the time to really look at it or not.”

Beyond the fir wood was an open curve in the road and she had promised to wave a last farewell as they passed around it. We watched the curve in silence, in the sunshine of the autumn morning. The delight of the world had been ours on the golden road…But now the shadow of change was over it.

“They all want to know which novel is your favorite. I suspect most of them don’t really want to hear the obvious answer! But I’m over that. This is my authentic answer. Pride and Prejudice!”

Two pieces by high school students in the same week worth a read (one from The Important Work, one from The Atlantic). theimportantwork.substack.com/p/at-my-high...

Two headlines from different articles. First says "At my high school no one is talking about AI. but everyone is using it. Aug. 28 Sam Barber." Second says "I'm a high schooler. AI is demolishing my education. The end of critical thinking in the classroom. By Ashanty Rosario"

“If information felt unmanageable to Francis Bacon and Virginia Woolf, how could it not feel that way to us? In our age of infinite scrolls, we need the commonplace book more than ever—to capture and make sense of our reading before it all melts back into the digital soup.”
