The governor told reporters at a December media availability he plans to propose a supplemental budget for 2026 that relies on cuts to balance, with no new revenue. This would be a huge mistake. Legislators must chart a different course.

I think the WA-05 congressional district is winnable right now for Democrats with the right candidate focusing on the right issues.

Here’s what I’d be looking for in a candidate:

My ideal Washington tax system:

– LVT instead of property tax, with no 1% cap
– much lower sales tax and B&O tax
– modest progressive income tax
– capital gains tax similar to Idaho’s
– tax on VMT
– eliminate junk government fees
And yet progressive activists aren’t willing to have a conversation about reforming our broken tax code.

It’s not enough to say “we need to raise taxes on the rich.”

We need to fundamentally change our tax system. Some taxes should go up. Some taxes should go down. But no one is doing that work!
Trump 2.0 has really exposed how brittle and broken the West Coast states' tax systems are. WA, OR, and CA all have a 1% property tax cap. WA has a sales tax but no income tax; OR has an income tax but no sales tax. It is not possible to effectively resist Trump without fixing these tax systems.

I am once again asking Washington’s progressive activist community to spend a couple years focused on fundamental reform of our tax system instead of their otherwise core issues.

A better world is possible, but only if we set the foundation to make it possible.

Labor Day. I thought of the lines from Shelley’s poem “Ozymandias”, as I contemplated the poster of Donald Trump that now decorate the Department of Labor in Washington, DC. I thought of labors of creation, and of destruction.

If the Union is to be saved — again — then Democratic-led, Democratic-governed states like Washington, Oregon, and California are going to have to step up and break out of old paradigms that assume the federal government is a friend.

I grew in CDA and remember the actual KKK marching down Sherman Ave in the 90's, and the Aryan Nations HQ'd in Hayden. This is an incredible turnout for a city of this size (2k+ per the article) and I couldn't be happier to see so much momentum against Trump.

Being a historian doesn’t give me the mantle of authority to say definitively what’s happening here or how anyone should respond, but I feel qualified to say this: If you were writing an account of how the United States devolved into violence and fragmentation, all this would be chapter 1 or 2.
