The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Just a reminder: having a functional moral compass right now is going to make you feel bad all the time; don’t mistakenly hate yourself for that.

Name calling almost always works against people who take themselves too seriously and also have fragile egos. I have no idea why the Dems abandoned this. Although it does fit in with their strategy of not doing things that work.

A good thing to do if you are flailing a bit right now (as who is not??) is to get in touch with your own values, the things that you find life affirming and necessary in the world. Read some inspiring works about things you value - labor solidarity, scientific achievement, social justice.

"Gulf of America" is just a loyalty test. It's a way of checking who is going to abrogate reality for no reason other than a cowardly refusal to stand up to the bully or an opportunistic willingness to toady up to one. Anyone who will call it that will help you round people up or look the other way.

Drives me crazy. If you don’t want to fight say so. Stop trying to discourage others from doing the work you’re too jaded to do.

You try 50 times and win the 51st. That’s how it works. Progress happens when you find ways to make it matter. And sometimes it’s just your persistence.

Republicans are the ocean drowning us all; Democrats have largely chosen to be the weight tied to our ankles that we have to rid ourselves of before we can start the work of swimming to the surface.
All these Democratic dinosaurs posting their usual platitudes here, the ones they said and wrote thousands times before - and getting ratioed - is a sight to behold.

I will never stop being mad about how the media has treated the anti-trans movement as a group of ordinary people with legitimate concerns rather than the obvious frothing bigots they are.
ABC White House correspondent just released ANOTHER anti-trans EO expected that we did not cover in our piece this morning:

A federal ban on funding to programs that acknowledge and affirm transgender people.
