When I got pregnant with my younger daughter, my oldest was going through a "watch My Neighbor Totoro every day" phase. I remember that I first suspected I might be pregnant when the theme music started to make me cry. I think she maybe manifested herself a little sister. 😅

There isn't a single problem "solved" by edtech that couldn't be fixed with smaller classes led by well-paid teachers given real academic freedom

how much water does it take to disrupt the careers of millions of people? how much water does it take to make deepfakes of underage kids? how much water does it take to exacerbate people's mental health crises? is there a good number? is there an acceptable number?

Starting to think most tech bro inventions are primarily to fill the deep lack they each have inside. Just because Sam Altman can't imagine it doesn't mean you can't!
Giving boys baby dolls to play with won't make them grow up to be gay. But it will make them grow up to be dads who can parent without ChatGPT.

Donald Trump has ruined my life. But liberals want to make him stop ruining the lives of other people that I don't like. I have never felt more politically homeless.

As someone with 2 ND daughters, the "They don't need x, they just need better parenting!" line is still alive and well and is the kind of thing that rings in your mind in the dead of night. I've seen so many flippant "I'm not afraid to tell them 'no'",--do you think I have not already tried that??
I'm Gen X and there was DEFINITELY stigma for anyone who had their kids on meds and a whole lot of blaming bad parenting and those people are still out there with their shitty opinions.

Fash-adjacent "wellness" bullshit still has a pretty strong hold in many ostensibly liberal circles, despite the fact we've seen pretty clearly this last year where that leads.

As a therapist who frequently works with kids and parents trying to get an IEP, it's no easy thing. And very often the burden of shame prevents anyone from even asking for one to begin with. It's so far from some reactionary centrist fantasy of any kids just getting these things with no issue.

I would rather have a world where we all trust each other and accept that a few people will take advantage of it than a world where folks have to perform disability constantly in order to get the help they need. Let kids have an extra 30 minutes on the test, jesus fucking christ

Low-trust societies are so expensive, I swear.

To bare my chest, my spouse and I just navigated two years of fighting for IDEA accommodations for our older kiddo whose dyslexia and decoding skills deficits were so pronounced that, in 3rd grade, their reading test scores were <1st percentile.
This is what frustrates me so much about these articles: Propagating the narrative that large numbers of kids are faking disabilities is just going to result in a world where disabled people are *even more* scrutinized when they ask for accommodations!
My kids go to a "rich" public school. My daughter is 7 and cannot read; she is a sweet, caring, intelligent child, but if you spend a moment with her it is clear that she has ADHD an order of magnitude more serious than what you think of when you hear "ADHD." Anybody questioning her IEP can fuck off

It's easy to see shoddy research as a bad actor problem. But if AI slop like this can make it through editors and peer reviewers, it means there are systemic problems at work. And I'd argue that at least part of the problem is the overwork culture in academia-- pressure to do more while caring less.

After watching my wife struggle to get her diagnosis in her 30s and worrying that my youngest child might be similarly overlooked, I'm getting increasingly annoyed with the "autism is overdiagnosed" narrative. 🙄
The story told here--one where anecdata suggests agency and autonomy have run amok and nameless activists are to blame--certainly rhymes with the NYT's disastrous panic about trans kids. Then you realize it's literally being written by the same author.
Autism rates have increased in recent decades, but the reasons are more complicated than what Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has presented. Hear more on today's episode of "The Daily." nyti.ms/480eqtm

Wife: Here, come relax. I'll draw you a bath.
Me, overstimulated: Gets in bath while kids are distracted, locks door.
Seconds later...door pops open, kiddo and toddler come in.
Me: How'd you open that door?!
6 y.o.: Mom, don't you know what a pair of scissors can do?
Me: Baaaaabe
Wife: But she's SIX

I was going to be an artist and get a fine arts degree until my parents and I were staring down the barrel of art school tuition costs. So I chose my second passion, biology. My local uni had a great research/medical program and offered me hefty scholarships to attend, plus I could save $$ by (1/2)
