A while back I put some thought into doing a book about the 60s & 70s NYPD "Seven-Ups" unit and its depictions in films—the fact that Frankenheimer did his Popeye-heroin-withdrawal FC II movie instead of some of the real stories about Egan and Grosso and Nunziata and Papa and Matthews is a bummer.

Amazing thread, especially for those with an interest in the NYPD of the 1960s/1970s. (I've been down a rabbit hole, having just read the 1981 book PAPA'S GAME, about the evidence-room theft of the French Connection heroin)

I'm going to share the weird William Friedkin story that's been stuck in my head almost my whole life. Some folks know this, I guess. But it always blows people's minds.

This is a great essay; read it!

Blast from the past: a piece I did in 2006 about a trio of notoriously ultra-violent, politically reactionary movies from 1971: The French Connection, Dirty Harry, and Straw Dogs

Photo from the set of THE KILLERS!

Always blows my mind a little to see color photos from the sets of black-and-white classics.

Where I grew up, the newsstand had old men, cigars, and Hustler. This is why nobody stays in Ohio.

Definitely! Makes for an interesting double-header with Night Moves.

Sold! I was a big fan of Three O'Clock High as a teenager.

I don't think I've seen Heaven's Prisoner's, either, so thanks.

no matter what you think of THE DROWNING POOL, I don't think anyone—cast, crew, whatever—could ever have a better consecutive run of films than this. (I say this in full recognition of John Cazale's achievement.)

Thinking of renting FINAL ANALYSIS (never seen it) just for the Jordan Cronenweth photography. (Also in its favor: I don't think I've ever witnessed a boring Eric Roberts performance.)

Any thoughts?

Very Trump-era story.
1. The sword has no meaning for Charles, but matters for the Eisenhower Museum.
2. Illegal for the museum to give away US property!
3. Trump makes no distinction between personal/public property.
4. The person who did the right thing was fired.

1971 was considered a year of crisis for the American free press. And yet here's the New York Times celebrating CBS for blowing the whistle on the military-industrial complex. CBS President Frank Stanton stood up to a subpoena.

Where are those institutions at now?

In this case, a federal grand jury refused to indict on gun possession charges.

Undeterred, DC USAO goes to a LOCAL grand jury in DC (local) Superior Court and get the LOCAL GJ to indict on FEDERAL charge.

Superior Ct has separate grand jury process from DDC. They are different courts!
