Notorious for her many marriages and affairs with artistic greats, Alma Mahler-Werfel acquired a reputation as a femme fatale, a sort of intellectual dominatrix. Now Gustav Mahler’s widow, long reviled by biographers, is being reassessed.

In an increasingly provocative world, many of us seek to manage our emotions. But instead of asking whether you’re overreacting, you might ask, Am I reacting as usefully as I can?

My blog is out: how tequila took over the world: Mexico's most famous spirit, and its artisanal cousin mezcal, have enjoyed wild popularity in recent years - but there could be trouble ahead. Plus: what I've been drinking in Mexico City this week

Some amazing Beerenauslese from Rust in Burgenland with the Foie Gras. Some Marlborough with the caviar and salmon.

Rediscovered "Exact Thinking in Demented Times" by Karl Sigmund. Such a wonderful group biography and a very accessible work on the history and philosophy of science!

Pop a nice Blaufraekisch Reserve from Burgenland or an aged Riesling from Kamptal and sink into the world of the Vienna Circle!

I took the train from Vienna to Western Romania via Northeastern Hungary for Christmas. The train was full of Ukrainians.

Same on the way back.

I am glad to see Ukrainians embracing the Gregorian Christmas so fast. Sad they got home just in time for Russia's Christmas Day massive attack.

Voting today in Vienna in the Romanian Parliamentary Election, against the far-right, while an illegal far-right pro-Kickl demonstration is blocking the Ringstraße.

What times...

Just voted in the Romanian presidential elections. (The country where I grew up.) there is a real chance that the candidate of a new far-right, euroskeptic, and pro-Russia will win. It is almost certain that he will be in the second round and that the liberal candidate I voted for will not.

True. The job of a good bartender is to make sure you only stay in either of the first two drives.
Whiskey is amazing because you can go through all of Freud's major drives within a single bottle.
