My grand finale tonight. An image I've dreamed of capturing ever since being a young boy in the 1960s. The iconic Horsehead Nebula. It's taken 4 months since buying the SeestarS50 for the time, location and seeing conditions to be right.

This image showcases the stunning Orion Nebula (M42), one of the brightest and most well-known star-forming regions in the night sky. Located approximately 1,344 light-years away, this stellar nursery is a breathtaking mix of glowing hydrogen gas, dust, and newly formed stars. At its heart lies the Trapezium Cluster, a group of hot, young stars whose intense ultraviolet radiation illuminates the surrounding gas clouds. Above M42, you can also spot the Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977), a reflection nebula with a characteristic bluish hue. This area highlights the contrast between the cooler, reflective dust clouds and the warm hydrogen emissions from the Orion Nebula itself. The colors in this image aren't just for show, they reveal the chemistry of the nebula: Reds and pinks come from hydrogen-alpha emissions, the hallmark of star-forming regions. Blues are the result of starlight scattering off dust particles. The earthy browns and golds reflect the darker, dusty regions that obscure parts of the nebula. Nikon D750 (unmodified) Telescope 8" Newtonian (200/1000mm). 37 frames, each 10 minutes long, to capture the faint, outer regions. 15 short frames of 3 seconds to preserve the detail in the bright Trapezium core. Stacked and stretched in Siril, with progressive edits in GIMP using subtle adjustments to balance highlights and shadows across the image.

It is at redshift 0.41 (lookback time 4.51 billion years) with coordinates (189.32008, 62.16882).

Here's a shot from last night of Messier 42, the Great Nebula in Orion. It is a vast cloud of gas around 1,300 light years away that is in the process of forming stars. 🔭
