I’m entering the phase of my PhD where I realise that good writing is childlike in simplicity and without any academic pretence, and is also the hardest thing to do.

How does one write as well as a child?

“5 6 pick up sticks. 7 8 lay them straight.”

The detuned radio intro to Road to Hell remains, to me, the most sinister of album intros.

When I played @hideokojima.bsky.kojimaproductions.jp’s PT, it took me back to this formative listening experience.

"Son, what are you doing here?
My fear for you has turned me in my grave"

LinkedIn is quietly the most interesting social media site.

It's the one without ~all this~ because everyone is maintaining toxic positivity to land their next job.

It's the capitalist utopia.

GenAI cannot coexist with educational institution’s slavery or ethical statements, 24hr game jams normalise toxic working practice such as crunch, no person should have to “build resilience” to work in games, no games worker should have to demonstrate “appreciation” for working in the sector.❤️
gen AI is bad and don't expect to make public statements w/o public backlash, no one should crunch but especially not for an internal demo, no one is the father of indie games and but if there is one then I vote for the guy who made Cave Story, what else am I missing from today

This aligns with the student sentiment we see in games courses in the UK.
That… seems pretty worth paying attention to.

"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.

The games industry brings in 300 billion dollars a year. The guy who made DOOM gets his projects canceled, the guy who made Katamari Damacy is broke, everyone in your feed is begging for a job and there are 50 new games coming out on Steam every day all going towards buying Gabe Newell's next yacht
Keita Takahashi (Katamari, Wattam, Noby Noby Boy) has moved back to Japan, and says he may be forced to quit the games industry due to To a T underperforming.

He also says he'd love to work on Katamari again, and for someone to invest in his studio.

This is quite narrow framing which kind of fudges two issues into one, but both those issues are interesting: the enormous bloat of large academic spaces, and the rise of AI authored papers. Neither are unique to AI research but the former is very bad right now: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

With universities facing increasing pressure from top-down directives to integrate GenAI into their curricula and research, how do UK universities align their AI strategy with the Modern Slavery Act?
Is there a tacit acceptance that ethical debt will increase in the pursuit of financial gain?
