Great to see the RSS featured in Full Fact’s piece on BMA’s claim of a 21% real-terms pay cut for resident doctors.
Our Chief Exec explains why the choice of inflation index matters, and RSS fellow Jill Leyland contributed to the analysis.

The figure cited by the BMA is based on an unreliable measure of inflation. Other measures suggest the drop has been less. Our analysis using a measure backed by the Royal Statistical Society puts the...

As you may have noticed, I rarely leap to defend university management, but this allegation is outrageous.

What other Government-regulated industry has had what it can charge consumers largely frozen for a decade, eroding its value by a third?

You’ve seen the signs: ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’. They lie. In the UK ‘trespass’ is a civil offence, not a criminal one. You cannot face prosecution simply for being on someone’s land, off a designated Right of Way, open access land, or land where bylaws permit access, without permission.

The irony in this award is agonising. He did, indeed, “help to shape the university sector as we know it today.” As noted, he oversaw the introduction of a new fee regime with no provision for inflation, which is why, 15 years on, the sector is bankrupt.

How HS2 built a bridge to nowhere
A state-of-the-art road bridge has been built deep in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire. Designed to carry traffic over the HS2 railway, there's just one tiny problem - there's no actual road.
