happy bday civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, b.1917, Montgomery county, MS.

They come when you step back.

Yay for Dartmouth! New Hampshire shows it really means “live free or die.”

It appears that my employer, Dartmouth, one of the Trump 9, has said no to the compact. All the better given that our president is cited within it. But she’s saying no. Count the small victories when they come.
Office of the President
Dear Dartmouth community,

As many of you know, Dartmouth was one of nine universities asked by the White House to give feedback by Oct. 20 on a draft of its “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I am deeply committed to Dartmouth’s academic mission and values and will always defend our fierce independence.

You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.

Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

There is no bailout that will solve this problem.

It took decades to create the markets for beans and months to devastate the markets for beans.

NY Times: China Bought $12.6 Billion in U.S. Soybeans Last Year. [52% of exports] Now, It’s $0.

Cutting off mRNA research because the first mRNA vaccines weren't good enough - *even if that were true, which it really isn't* - is like if we banned personal computers in 1981 because the IBM PC was too expensive

put street trees everywhere you can in a neighborhood, make curb cuts so that their roots can absorb storm water from the street, grow native plants around their base, check back in five years and count how many welfare and health measures have improved

Refuse to comply in advance
Notice when you start to do this and stop it. Think ahead about situations where you moving need to refuse to comply so you can prepare your response. If you can, offer an alternative solution that aligns with your values but protects your boundaries.

Though it's honestly heartbreaking to be back at this point again where science is under constant attack, I do love seeing that all the slogans from our signs at the March of Science in 2017 are now a regular feature of lab walls, and that advocacy is far more common in every day scientific spaces.
Uncertainty looms over nearly every experiment and conversation. Slogans, not scientific sketches, are scrawled on the frosted glass wall of one office:
“We want scientific data, not alternative facts!”
“Girls just wanna have (NIH) funding”
“Science Not Silence!”
More than a dozen NIH grants, out of several hundred, have been terminated, though they are tangled up in lawsuits challenging the Trump administration’s actions.

DuckDuckGo has added a feature to filter out AI images from search results.
Post from "The Rundown"

July 18 at 5:30 PM
 ·
DuckDuckGo has introduced a new feature allowing users to filter out AI-generated images from search results, addressing growing concerns over synthetic content overwhelming authentic visuals online.
The filter can be activated through a dropdown in the Images tab, search settings, or by using a dedicated AI-free domain: noai.duckduckgo.com. The system relies on curated blocklists, including uBlockOrigin’s Huge AI Blocklist, to detect and suppress AI-generated imagery.
While not perfect, it significantly reduces synthetic content visibility. This move sets DuckDuckGo apart from competitors like Google and Bing by giving users direct control over their exposure to AI-generated material.

I was talking with a teenager recently who is not a transphobe but said he didn’t think it was fair for trans women to play women’s sports . I said that I didn’t think it was fair that people who are taller than me get to play basketball and he paused for a moment and then said, ok you’re right.
