Back home in Herefordshire. Slowly being crushed under the weight of books still to be read.
Well, that's me done. I'm going to bed.

I can’t recommend the weird, almost body-horror gruesomeness of this episode on mincemeat enough, but my biggest takeaway is that Fanny Craddock appears to have perfected an aesthetic that can only be described as “Samurai Thatcher”.

Might have something to do with sustained attacks on Higher Education in general, and the humanities in particular, by the previous government and its client journalists at the Telegraph, along with massive cuts to funding, caused by that government's policies. You can't have it both ways.

Powell and Pressburger alert!

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (1946), one of the most inventive and headily romantic films ever made, is on BBC Two today at 12.35 and BBC iPlayer. See thread for some background to the iconic stairway to heaven and its impact on wider culture.

Chef's kiss of an anecdote 👌
For those who don't know this story, which I first shared six years ago today....

This one time I got my days wrong at work and ended up alone in a room with my boss and the President of Ireland while I was on ketamine.

Tony Hatch is 85 now. He not only wrote this extraordinary classic but produced the huge sound to - this among so, so many others. I have not seen a documentary on him. If he were American we would be in absolute awe.

Planning to watch the BFI and Film Foundation restoration of I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING! (Powell and Pressburger, 1945) today? It's on BBC Two (and iPlayer) at 16.10. Given my borderline obsession with the film, here’s a thread with some IKWIG-related info and links.
