Attenuation of the SARS-2 furin-cleavage site (FCS) continues apace. It's beginning to look as if some form of FCS-weakening mutation might well become fixed in the near future. Collectively, they are at ~12% globally—a totally unprecedented level—& rising quickly. 1/4

i think the wave is gone quite globally, probably still up in Indonesia, Western Europe, central and Southern South America

Both emergency dept and wastewater data suggest a rapid decline in prevalence after a relatively modest summer peak. The lull in evolution continues... with no new fast variants close behind XFG.

That being said, we're still watching BA.3.2*

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

#BreastCancer is the most common cancer among women globally and represents approximately a quarter of all cancers that occur in women every year.
Breast cancer is highly curable if detected in its early stages and adequate treatment is provided.

with the last upload BA.3.2.2 represents 20% of samples collected in September in Western Australia. and 40% of the most recent ones. the tree shows no cluster involved so it is circulation

At 0:20, three agents pick him up and slam him head first into the ground. There is no justification for this, they were trying to seriously injure him

this man refused to combat and he was jailed , today he entered Gaza and see how IDF treated him.
And be sure HAMAS would have done the same.

This is what men of peace suffer right now in the world.

Here’s an op-ed I wrote arguing to get back to a focus on the relevant facts when it comes to pandemic origins.

I wrote it in response to a debate that’s played out over the last year in Norwegian media that rarely slows down to check what’s true and false.

🚨New paper out!

Why does Staphylococcus aureus ST1 dominate in BOTH people🧑‍⚕️ & cows🐄 in New Zealand… but rarely elsewhere?

Our latest comparative genomics study unpacks this mystery👇

They seem to be rising both in wastewater in Perth/Western Australia, assuming the braun KP.3.x is PE.1.4.

Here’s the zoomed in view of their variant chart. BA.3.2.* rose sharply to 20.2% for the week ending 21-Sep-2025.

This is a small uptick from the prior week. BA.3.2.* grew the most in that week, from 7.9% to 20.2%, so is probably driving that change in momentum.

XFG.1.1 was recently defined, characterised by a reversion to Spike W452R, which captured the attention of the Variant Hunters.

XFG.1.1 has mostly been reported from North America, and has also started showing in US wastewater samples.

New South Wales has uploaded their samples to GISAID.

They have also found a BA.3.2 for the first time!

Several were found before in Western Australia.

Lastly, a funny story. At first, @siamosolocani.bsky.social referred to BA.3.2 as "The Great Cucumber," which we all found quite confusing. Apparently, this is the Italian translation for "The Great Pumpkin" in the classic Peanuts Halloween special. 3/3

And though the BA.3.2 wastewater levels in Western Australia fluctuate widely from week to week, @mikehoney.bsky.social notes that the WW prevalence of the Great Pumpkin have reached their highest levels yet, at around 20%. 2/3

BA.3.2.* (arising from a chronic case with many mutations) appears to be well established in Western Australia now, up to 20% in their recent wastewater analysis.

I’ve used WA Health’s COVID-19 wastewater surveillance page to estimate the number of infections of BA.3.2.

I estimate ~1,100 BA.3.2.* infections in Perth for the latest week, and ~2,600 over the last 5 reported weeks.

"The Great Pumpkin"—@siamosolocani.bsky.social's apt nickname for BA.3.2—has now shown up in New South Wales, Australia, for the first time.

Together with its continued presence in clinical samples and wastewater in Western Australia, this confirms real community BA.3.2 transmission in AUS.

They have started to put PE.1.4, a KP.3.1 sublineage, on the map in New South Wales/Australia.

We have seen it grow in Queensland and New Zealand as well, but it has hardly been seen outside of Oceania.

Will it stay there mostly, like XBC eg. did, or will it conquer the world?
