I seem to be on some starter packs so thought it’s probably about time I did a little bit of an introductory thread. It might end up being a bit long and go to places you didn’t expect! Here goes.

Kia ora, I’m Siouxsie, a microbiologist and bioluminescence enthusiast in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Wellingtonians - Are you interested?

An hour of unlimited play on the machines at Ye Olde Pinball Shoppe before regular opening hours on a Sunday from 10-11 am. N95 or better masks to be worn at all times and there is an air purifier. $20/person and we need 25 people to make the event happen.
The graphic has a violet background and white text. The text reads: Wellingtonians are you interested? Pinball wizards aren't required, but a mask is. Dividing the text is a photograph of the interior of an empty pinball arcade. There are also small graphic images of an N95 mask, and Aotearoa Covid Action's logo.

I'm working on a starter pack... its focus is Information Warfare, Covert Ops and Propaganda... trying to fill gaps on existing lists of 'disinfo' experts and bring in a wider sweep of experts on covert ops & information warfare, broadly defined. go.bsky.app/7NTCqKZ

I had the honour of joining my close friend Golriz Ghahraman to discuss how we navigated public shaming, how we supported each other and the way it has built resilience in both of us and a passion for online safety.

Both spoke to The Elephant, an online video series about controversial topics we avoid.

I’m glad so many people have found my “capybara method” for how to write alt text and image descriptions helpful! However, I know conflicting access needs exist and not everyone can write their own #AltText, so here’s an ongoing thread of tools that can help. Inclusion in thread ≠ endorsement
An infographic titled “How To Write Alt Text” featuring a photo of a capybara. Parts of alt text are divided by color, including identify who, expression, description, colour, and interesting features. The finished description reads “A capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on the top of the capybara’s head.” Credit to Puzzle agency, original information from Veronica With Four Eyes and veroniiiica dot com

This is worth reading if you’re wondering where you stand as an author whose work was ripped off by Anyhropic.

Looks like, as I was worrying, that I’ll probably not get a payout since my work wasn’t registered with the US copyright office.

A few little snaps from the exhibition - I talked about how 200 years ago, I wouldn't have been able to vote, let alone be elected to city council, how we value "women's work" (both in the age of pay equity being cancelled and crafts as art), and how many women fought to be able to vote
A photograph of a knitted banner, with loose wool tails and still on the needles - which says "Democracy Knits by Louise Hutt" in shades of green on a white background A clothes line of pegged hats, in different colours which all say "VOTE" with printed process photos underneath of all the places the hats were knit, and a mirror nearby A photograph of Louise, speaking to a crowd A knitted 'VOTE' beanie on a mannequin, wearing a pair of white sunglasses. In the background are "Louise Hutt #1 Hamilton West" corflute signs.

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.
