Just following some cool artists atm

I still want to make cartoons, but my dream has shifted from pitching to these bullshit corpos to just doing it all on my own. I'm making my move on my own business now instead of waiting around and I think more artists should start thinking about doing the same.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for creators to learn self-employment skills right now. I’m not saying this to scare people, but we need to be honest if artists are going to continue to work at all. The current state of getting studio entertainment work is bleak.

Hey artists, yes, you should have some other day job while pursuing art and NO, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE RETAIL OR FOOD SERVICE (unless you are a beast and like that stuff).

Try your best to find something that matches your interest and energy.

Your art isn’t bad just because it’s not selling right now.

We’re in a recession and people don’t know when they’re gonna eat next, nobody can afford fun things because the economy is crumbling. It’s going to be hard a while.

I apologize to all of the lovely people who asked me the totally normal question of “How did you find your style?” at LightBox Expo only for me to give the most useless answer possible: “This is the stuff I can’t help but make.” Which is true but also entirely unhelpful. I do have a suggestion!

being an independent artist is so easily romanticized.

it's worth every second, but it's more than just making art all day. be prepared to learn business skills as well, which can often mean learning marketing, teaching, communication and financial skills.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 999:
It’s not just the story that matters, it’s the person telling it. Your stories are filtered through your experience, your culture, your upbringing, your identity. Don’t be afraid to let it show. Those things matter. You matter.

As the leaves change color it’s time for everyone’s yearly reminder NOT to rake up the leaves!!!! Leaf litter is important for soil nutrition, healthier plants once spring comes, and biodiversity! Nature developed this yearly ritual for a reason 💖

let's just say that, to me, creating art and posting it to social media are two separate things entirely (and they require two completely different skillsets). The creative process should be just for you*, and the worth of your art should never be tied to how social media/other people perceive it

There's something magical about being an artist because we as artists will often cringe at our old work but there will always be someone who treasures it as their favourite - I sometimes remind myself of that.

IDK who needs to hear this today, but you do not need intimate knowledge of ANYTHING, not even fundamentals, to draw. You dont need to be an expert to just doodle and do your thing.

No matter where you are on your journey - YOU ARE AN ARTIST.

i think a lot of ppl get hung up on the idea that developing/updating their characters/sonas invalidates or obsolesces older art of them. while old versions of your characters may not be accurate with what they are now, isn't it nice to have a visual timeline of their development?

A lot times artist think they need to work on their posing because they feel "stiff" or boring but its actually their camera angles and perspective that needs work.

1/8 Netflix just released guidelines on GenAi use.

When all 40+ lawsuits on GenAl finalize, if it's found that GenAi models DO infringe copyright, will companies like Netflix pretend they never did stuff like buying VFX studios that build off Stable Diffusion & LAION or this?

If you are struggling to find the desire to draw sit in front of you current piece for 15-30 minutes and just look at it. I swear I always end up picking up my pen and diving in.

Struggling to start? Go out there and consume art that you’ve liked or saved. Inspiration always seems to hit

Getting tired of people asking me how to go about different aspects of art/being an artist and assuming there's some "magic trick" they aren't getting, then disliking the realistic answers I give them.

I've been drawing and posting art online since the 90s. It just takes a long time for most of us.

Fuck censorship. They're coming after you next, whether you make porn or not. I have never sold NSFW services or artwork, yet here's my termination from Stripe! Fully SFW, innocent headshots of furries = adult content. This is what we've been trying to fucking tell y'all this whole month!

Look you just have to make the cool weird shit that excites you. You must. In this world besieged by bland, scrubbed boring, computer slop, you must. Make the thing you’re embarrassed to make, the thing that feels “too much” because otherwise we get drowned in a sea of cowardly work made by a button

Indie comics ain't easy. Working very hard to make something as well as you possibly can that you know only a few people outside of yourself care about can be quite lonely, and often feels almost like a folly.

Please let indie creators know you enjoy their work, it really helps.

In everything you do, it’s all about enjoying the process. From making art, to playing video games, and even exercising. Fishing a piece of art, hitting that weight goal, beating the game, never feels as good as the process.

When learning from other artists, keep asking "what do I like about this?" instead of getting too rigid with your comparison.

Explore what you like. Leave the rest.
