Fantastic piece from Cecilie, who had three kids during her PhD but was also incredibly productive publishing top papers & doing groundbreaking work whilst facing many challenges. Immensely proud of all she's achieved! Excellent call for how academia could better accommodate life-work balance! 👇👏

Sharing this feels vulnerable but meaningful. 💛

In this piece for @natureportfolio.bsky.social, I reflect on having 3 children during my PhD - why I’d do it all over again, but also why academia shouldn’t make it this hard for parents to thrive.🍼🎓

I had three children during my PhD: here’s what I learnt
Cecilie Steenbuch Traberg worried that choosing to have children during her graduate studies might signal a lack of career dedication.

We're starting to get September updates to global temperature data sets. First up is ERA5. The plot shows Septembers from 1850-2023. Not only does ERA5 break the record, it breaks it by a record amount and a huge margin. 🧵
Graph of global mean temperature for Septembers from September 1850 to September 2023. September 2023 is by far and away the warmest September on record globally. Six datasets are shown with good agreement between them, but only ERA5 is updated to 2023 so far.

I used to use Pew research data in a PSY111 class demonstration of cognitive biases, showing that although students strongly believed gun violence was on the rise, it had actually been declining for many years.

Have had to ditch that demonstration in recent years... 😔

The number of kids killed by gunfire in the US rose 50% in two years. 2021, the most recent year with available data, had the highest recorded count of kids killed by gunfire since at least 1999, when the CDC began making this data available.

Chart showing that in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, there were 1,732 gun deaths among U.S. children and teens under the age of 18. By 2021, that figure had increased to 2,590.

Thanks Allison! That's a wonderful idea.
