I've been off the socials for a while, but wanted to pop over here to replicate an old thread from Tw*tt*r with citations supporting salary transparency in library job postings. Please feel free to share widely, and DM or email me if you need a PDF of any of these articles!

Student publication broadsheet

A sign held by young person smiling fist in the air reads:

Fuck Giuliani and Pataki
[former mayor and former governor]

The main theme and goal is in the headline:

SHUT THE CITY DOWN!

If you missed @shannonmattern.bsky.social’s brilliant essay “Fountain Society,” @nytimes.com's David Brooks recommends the read & we do too! His Sidney Awards feature the best long-form essays published this year in small publications.

Read "Fountain Society" here: placesjournal.org/article/drin...
Fountain Society
The humble drinking fountain can tell us much about a society’s attitudes towards health, hygiene, equity, and virtue, and about its understanding of public goods and civic responsibilities.

The sun will go down. The sun will rise again. It has has gotten darker. It will get bright again. The dark has wrapped and sheltered us, but now its time is done. And if we want the light back, and not just the sun, we better build a damn big fire.

Happy solstice.

I have somehow only just discovered the Letterform Archive lecture series this year, and they have been an absolute DELIGHT. The zoom comments if you’re attending live are a constant stream of “OMG THOSE SERIFS 😍” and “look at that 4! *swoon*” They are font-dork heaven, AND they’re FREE

All workers, no matter their age, deserve to be paid enough to meet their needs. But beyond that, prison library work is skilled, valuable, difficult labour. Prison library workers should be paid more than the legal minimum.

Here’s some of the data that backs it! (And CPC = cetylpridinium chloride) pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34282982/
Periodic reminder in this winter season:

You might consider getting a mouthwash that contains CPC. Rinse + gargle your throat regularly, if you can.

It kills a range of viruses, not just COVID. It's evidence-based!

It's effective & not a lot of people know about it.

- It's no longer 'brave' or a sign of hard work to show up sick to work. It's a terrible Christmas present that your colleagues will hate you for.
- Get boosted (for Covid, flu, and RSV if available), will hopefully prevent some infection and ensure a milder course of illness for most.

Given the discussions on the Other Place recently on the purpose of public scholarship for historians, I want to re-up my "How Your History Gets Made" (acoup.blog/2020/07/09/c...).

One of the two main goals of my public scholarship is to make clear that academic historical research is necessary.
Collections: How Your History Gets Made
This week I want to explain how the academic side of history (the part that happens in research universities, a term I will define in a moment) leads to the history content that the public at large…
