My name is Soren Stevenson. I am a renter in the Lyndale neighborhood, a union member, and a survivor of police violence. I’m running for City Council in Ward 8 because my neighbors deserve a kinder, safer Minneapolis. That future isn’t just necessary - it’s within reach.

Mayor Frey is an enigma: A 2-term mayor with a message suggesting he's the zero tolerance on encampments candidate, yet he has presided over an endless string of encampment tragedies. The shootings, fires, the wackamole strategy, those are his results. The rhetoric doesn't match reality.

Last week, Mayor Frey continued his record of vetos that help only his donors. This is his 15th veto of Council actions, which is more than the previous two mayors combined. Minneapolis deserves better than bending to corporations at the cost of our local, BIPOC small businesses.

The mosque is still recovering from last week's attack, and there is additional damage from this attack. If you would like to help cover the costs of repairs, you can donate through this QR code

One week prior, a fire had been started on the outside of the mosque, and MPD ruled it an accident without even looking at the video footage. In the time of repeat attacks against this exact mosque, defacement of Temple Israel, the Annunciation shooting, and more, MPD must be vigilant against hate!

Literally three blocks from the house where my brother—my only sibling—died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in July 2021.

Thank you to CM Chavez and all who are dedicated to expanding his program.

Dear neighbor,

I’m excited to share that the City of Minneapolis has installed a new NARCAN® vending machine in Ward 9. You can find this new vending machine in Phillips at Fire Station 5 (2700 Bloomington Ave South). 1/

My brother died of an overdose over 15 years ago. While this wouldn't have helped in his situation, this will save the lives of others. I'm proud of whatever steps we as a city can take to help prevent the pain that my family went through.

In light of the recent threat to our campaign HQ and a steady escalation of death threats, we're increasing safety measures to protect Omar Fateh, his family, & our campaign. We need to raise $10,000 more than we'd planned to cover critical security needs. secure.actblue.com/donate/fateh...

We do not take this lightly, and we are increasing our security measures to ensure the safety of Omar Fateh, his family, and our campaign team. This means we have new costs for security.

There was an arson attack against our neighborhood's mosque. Please come to tonight's event to show solidarity with our muslim community and donate to the restoration fund. Islamaphobia and anti-muslim hate have no place in MPLS, and our community is eagerly seeking justice for this hate crime!

Last week, I let you all know that our advance notice of sale for commercial properties ordinance passed to specifically help our Cultural Corridors, North Mpls, & areas near the University.

B/c it protects tenants & small biz owners over corporate greed, Mayor Frey vetoed this ordinance. 1/
A letter from Mayor Frey vetoing our ordinance.

October 1, 2025
Minneapolis City Council
350 South 5th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55415

Council President Payne, Council Vice-President Chughtai, and Members of the City Council:
This letter is to inform you that I have vetoed Council Action No. 2025-043 and No. 2025-044.

I appreciate the author's attempt to address the need to diversify ownership of commercial spaces. It is our responsibility to do everything possible to rejuvenate commercial areas and business corridors and to help our city continue to rebound post-COVID-19. Unfortunately, this proposed ordinance would do the opposite. It would inhibit the very revitalization we want to see.

Requiring advance notice of sale for commercial properties creates unnecessary barriers for would-be buyers who want to revitalize vacant space, while offering no real benefit to commercial tenants, who already have options to choose from. Additionally, this proposal is harmful to residential taxpayers. At a time when commercial property valuations are declining, the ordinance would further devalue commercial space, leaving residents on the hook to cover the difference.

The ordinance would also create numerous conflicts with existing lease and operating agreements, mortgage restrictions, and purchase options— adding confusion to the marketplace and slowing down the revival we are working to achieve. Any potential upsides have not been supported by evidence.

An advance notice of sale does not inherently increase opportunities for purchase, because it does not expand tenants' ability to buy commercial property. It is unrealistic to expect a tenant who has difficulty paying rent to be in a position to purchase a building.
Rather than enacting policies that slow growth, we need to focus on practices that fill our vacant storefronts and create a healthy business environment.

Yours Truly,
layor Jacob Frey
City of Minneapolis

Didn't Jacob Frey run his first mayoral race based on ending homelessness? All of us deserve better.

Right now, the City's homelessness response team consists of just four positions – and they work in a department that manages parking enforcement and animal control.

Our unhoused neighbors deserve dignity. We need to do better – and with the right leadership, we can.
