"DOGE does not have power over established government agencies, and Musk has no role in government. It does not matter that he is an ally of the President. Musk is a private citizen taking control of established government offices. That is not efficiency; that is a coup."

I spent four years referring to Trump as an uncertainty engine, as any new tweet could remake US foreign policy.

This time, more uncertainty about most things but:

Finding places to send the massive deportees will be consistent focus on US foreign policy

The tariffs will happen

#catastrophic
"it now offers a test of a fundamental question about U.S. foreign policy: Are the policies Washington pursues on the global stage the product of who is in office or of the country’s hegemonic position in the international order?"
Trump is predictably unpredictable. It’s that uncertainty that worries so many leaders and observers of global affairs around the world.

Most U.S. Americans have little to no experience with authoritarian systems, and will be surprised by how it may work. Consider this letter from Chile from October 1973: it's not just the state that acts, it can also be neighbors who feel empowered by the authorities to be their worst selves

American democracy is so healthy it needs anti-scale fencing and military readiness for when it votes. America is Backsliding so fast we don't even realize what we have already lost.

Editors shouldn't even allow op-eds the centre on questions of fact. Whether a coup occurred isn't a matter of opinion, it's a question of fact. When an op-ed writer is objectively wrong, and you decide to publish their nonsense, you've published misinformation.
Yes, op-eds can be misinformation. And yes, the New York Times seems to publish a lot of them.
