I think everyone’s obsession with Heated Rivalry is giving us the much needed hope in our bones to know fascism won’t win. Culturally, we don’t want it. What we want is diverse complicated, and nuanced, love & joy. That’s the antidote.

There is a reason almost every Canadian I have spoken to about Heated Rivalry mentions the demonstration of ongoing consent which has been a national conversation concerning hockey for years. Jacob Tierney and Rachel Reid were purposeful and it was important what they showed a country in their work.

starting to percolate on the Jane Austen-inspired Regency script I need to write in Jan. This year I'm going to lean hard into the romance & the JOY... I want the audience giggling & kicking their feet by the end :)

off to the archives today to do research for building a community mini-exhibit about a historic hockey arena. I swear i did not plan this-

This!! So blessed bc I was a 90s highsch. theatre kid. I've tried to make this all so normal for my own kids growing up, so its not even a thing they have to think/worry about 💜
And I keep questions about new friends/romantic interests gender neutral, so no pressure :)
I know some people grew up in really religious and conservative environments but my Aunt took me to my fist Pride when I was 11, one of my bffs in high school was gay, half my college friends were queer, my first Toronto roommate was a lesbian, it’s just normal life to me.

Probably in regard to the people protesting that #HeatedRivalry is just a story, I repost this, which is a good blanket statement about art generally.

(Was Sept 24, 2025 if you are insane about citation like me)
Story is not what you have instead of reality. It is how you explain the reality you care about to people who don’t.

Ok, last thing tonight about Heated Rivalry.
Modern western media starves for joy, especially satisfying romantic joy
The end of Ep5 of HR gave us all one giant serving of JOY (queer joy!!!) and HOPE! And we all lost our collective minds-
The yearning of ep3 & the payoff of ep5 in joy 😭
💜Seek joy💜

Thinking about how deeply satisfying great art is. It doesn't make you feel stupid for caring- we connect with its layers of meaning.
Great art has the power to change how we see the world- and we are starved for it in media today.
It’s amazing how people, some for the first time, are understanding the power of art through Heated Rivalry. Art should make you feel and good art will make you reflect, but great art will lend you new perspective. There is so little that does that anymore because of über capitalism.

Treated myself to the first 3 episodes of Heated Rivalry. This is canadian cinematic tv at its finest. It has so many layers, the script is so tight, the cinematography, ughhh so good. I would just stop it, and go 'look at that shot, the composition, the colour- aughhh beautiful'. 1/3

AI companies = colonizing empires stealing everyone’s resources and then writing the rules for how you can interact with them
September 4, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Oh the plagarism slop machine practicing digital colonialism- yeah weird how proper historians are not fans 🤷‍♀️

The joy of being a historian, for me, is finding the little threads, the odd coincidences, the details that would be glossed over, and then having a THINK about. jfc.
You absolutely will not convince a bunch of historians and sociologists and whoever else is in this thread that you know more than we do about this and we should use it. I wish you AI enthusiasts would stop wading into our conversations. You have nothing helpful to contribute and are snarky.

A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

All of this!!
And.. we're getting a season 2? Like what?! Are good things happening fr? I'm still having yuri on ice flashbacks about S2, but i can't help but believe HR is in extremely good hands that 'get it' and won't let us down.
(Also when TLH comes out next year- its just so much winning)
i am still a reylo for life but i'll be damned if i'm not gonna enjoy a ship that is actually fun, extremely horny, instantly rewarding, full of bts/offscreen content, and pure joy!!! bless you hollanov for distracting me from this years long abusive relationship lol

Some of the lessons I have been reminded of from the success of Heated Rivalry as a creative person include:
-care deeply about your craft
-no detail is too small
-work hard but also have fun
-find people who understand your vision
-it's important to make work filled with joy
-swing for the fences
