In light of the Nobel committee laundering the politics of a hard-right figure in Venezuela, vis a vis the Peace award, I'd love to see a @acollierastro.bsky.social video on any past Physics recipients that were the product of science-community political machinations.

the *really* scary part is what's going to happen when it doesn't work. avg Americans being disengaged with politics is really bad but it also has the upshot of them not putting up with shit like this since it comes off as psycho. but then you back a fash into a corner...I guess we'll see
perfect encapsulation of what the far right is doing, they want to push the overton window as far as possible. they want to enact fascism and it’s intentional

So is Israel going to magically stop attacking Iran now? Because I'm pretty sure that "we're not getting dragged into a war" and "I swear this is just about nuclear enrichment" is pretty fucking predicated on that.
June 22, 2025 at 2:02 PM
Spot on. Gaza has made me angry, to be sure, but thats been an "angry because my soul constantly hurts" feeling; when this happened yesterday, all I could see was red. And in trying to navigate that, I have yet to discern whether my anger is greater towards my country or our useless opposition party
I have never been this angry in my life and I will never be this angry again. Nothing will ever compare to suddenly confronting my adolescent political disillusionment because the United States involved itself in another stupid fucking war. lindseyadler.substack.com/p/not-this-f...

How has "Cosplay Kristi" not caught on yet? C'mon internet, do better.
Nothing like Kristi Noem dismissing Padilla as “political theater.”

I can certainly relate to this sense of helplessness. The past 18 months has felt like the political version of sleep paralysis. My advice is, if you live near one, keep up to date with a local PSL or DSA chapter. Either, depending on location, have been great at connecting people to direct action.
Not suggesting people follow my links to donate to Gaza unless you want to. I don't know what else to do. I don't know how to help.
I am not suggesting you donate. I am sure that some of these are scams. I feel hopeless and have no idea what else to do. Follow your heart!

Yeah, this. The thing that most people don't get is that democracy is fundamentally not about decision making, but about power sharing. The distillation of power among the people. From this lens, it makes sense that even the most uninformed voter still deserves their slice of power.

I've been thinking a lot about this dynamic, and further, how the public perceives this as well. I've come up with a theory that I call "the Presumption of Violence": there is an expectation ingrained in the public consciousness that the Right will be violent, and so more latitude is given to it.

Guys, JD Vance didn't kill the Pope. He just told him what Ohio was like.
April 21, 2025 at 2:46 PM
And now, we as Americans get to confront the great paradox that is fascism: violent opposition is necessary to defeat fascism, but fascism openly invites violence in order to inflict further violence. Yet, without it, fascism grows. This is rooted in the Presumption of Violence the Right has.

Hear me out: accelerationism but just for this. I actually believe it's our moral duty as citizens to go to pro-Palestinian protests unmasked, to dare the admin to go after a citizen. We need to be the bait and the shield for our immigrant brothers and sisters.
Can we just get to the part where they deport or jail an American citizen for freedom of speech? I'm already tired of boiling the frog, just turn up the heat already.

....I still want to know @junlper.beer 's crazy theory :(
April 9, 2025 at 7:35 PM
This is more or less the pure distillation of the insidiousness of fascism: fighting fascism nearly *requires* a violent response (which include things like lawful arrests), yet responding violently at the very least emboldens their base, if not helps grow the whole movement.
At this point, it is genuinely unclear which would be the greater threat to our long-term democracy

* The next Dem president getting sworn in and immediately having Trump, Musk, Miller, etc all rounded up and summarily shot
* Not doing this

And that's really fucking terrifying!

This chart is actually better than what you see at first glance, considering Brett Cooper and Candace Owens left Daily Wire, thereby moving most of their viewers over to their personal channels. It should be looked at as a redistribution, and not a net gain, in right wing subscribers.
MASSIVE NEWS from progressive independent media. in Q1 2025 left wing YouTube grew far more quickly than right wing YouTube. Among independent channels, top left channels grew 33% faster than right wing channels from Jan-Mar. This is HUGE!

Something tells me this won't apply to the Israeli students who were at pro-zionism protests...
Marco Rubio on Rumeysa Ozturk: "We revoked her visa ... once you've lost your visa, you're no longer legally in the United States ... if you come into the US as a visitor and create a ruckus for us, we don't want it. We don't want it in our country. Go back and do it in your country."
March 27, 2025 at 6:50 PM
this shouldn't be that surprising to anyone paying attention to Pittsburgh politics; since 2018 we've been riding a progressive wave combined with well-organized local prog and leftist groups that punch far above their weight in terms of impact. I would argue Biden actually suppressed in 20.
You might have thought that after 2020's anti-Trump onslaught, Allegheny county's most highly politically engaged precincts could not possibly post higher numbers for a Dem candidate. But they really did find a way to 'vote harder!'
March 21, 2025 at 5:02 PM
oh we're fed posting today?
The “Dem Socialist” side and the further left you go is filled with racists who are just like their far right cousins.

Just in denial.

So Black People, proceed with caution. They do not like us, but pretend to.
You know what stories I would like to read and hear about?

People who have been pushed even more to the left/progressive/ Dem socialist side after the last several years-- and after everything happening with the Dem establishment now.
March 16, 2025 at 4:20 PM
because it's wrecker shit? because it follows the exact playbook feds use to cause division within leftist movements? because it's so non specific and doesnt actually call anything out?
March 16, 2025 at 4:18 PM
It's really, really, *really* hard to interpret the history you are currently living through, but we should be intensely probing whether or not we are in the beginning of a new, actual dark ages. Anti-intellectualism is through the roof right now, and it's possible this will last a long time.
this is our actual climate future staring us in the face - no consensus reality or shared source of authority, rampant conspiracies everywhere, more pressure to address made up nonsense than the underlying problem

conspiracy theories are fully mainstream now
LA Fire TikTok comments are BLEAK. Every conspiracy theory I’ve ever heard plus a bunch that are brand new.

gulags except just for class traitors who dismiss romaine and iceberg
Arugula is by far the best salad leaf. Kale can be too bitter and hearty, baby spinach is better sautéed (so is kale, honestly), mixed greens are passable but boring -- the salad you bring to a dinner party and people eat halfheartedly -- and romaine and iceberg are a waste of everybody's time.
I think I really love arugula

These figures come out to a minimum of 60 amputations a day for the past 441 days.

I find math to be both clarifying and horrifying. I want to jump out of my skin.
“As of yesterday, the number of wounded and injured people who have been admitted to hospitals since the beginning of the genocide waged by the Israeli occupation in Gaza has reached 107,338.”
