A Guillemot looking to the right. It is bridled, which it means it has a white ring around the eye and a white streak behind the eye.

Andy Street is spot on. Birmingham is a brilliant city. Vibrant, diverse, wonderful.

“I’ll put it bluntly, Robert is wrong… it’s actually a very integrated place... Not the definition of a slum.”

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands 2017-24, responds to Robert Jenrick's comments on Handsworth.

Our friends at the brilliant @littletollerbooks.bsky.social have just launched a new crowdfunding project for 'Looking for Mr Schwitters' — an innovative and finely illustrated book about the émigré artist Kurt Schwitters’ final years in the Lake District www.caughtbytheriver.net/2025/09/look...

This looks great from @littletollerbooks.bsky.social – a campaign to crowdfund a book on the Cumbrian home and work of Kurt Schwitters. I popped into his Merz Barn there a few years ago, a really crackers place then run by people no longer with us

I wrote an essay on high altitude peat bogs in New Guinea for "The Book of Bogs"(edited by Anna Chilvers & @clareshaw.bsky.social @littletollerbooks.bsky.social)
Here are a few pictures recorded on a life-changing research visit to the New Guinea Highlands when I was very young 😊

My copy of The Book of Bogs - edited by Anna Chilvers and @clareshawpoet.bsky.social - has arrived from @littletollerbooks.bsky.social and look how lovely this important book looks! And it’s full of wonderful work from fantastic authors, too.
Front cover of The Book of Bogs, featuring the stunning artwork called Autumn Comes To Walshaw Dean by Angie Rogers. I am holding the book in my left hand and the nail varnish on my thumbnail, a russet brown colour, matches the colourway of the bog depicted.

I’m sad to hear the news that the wonderful Jane Goodall is no longer in the world. Her work with chimpanzees at Gombe in Tanzania taught us to look at other apes - and ourselves - differently. I was privileged to meet her later in life and tell her what an inspiration she was to me.

Very sorry for your loss. Furbabies are so important to us but are only with us for relatively short time. RIP Pepper.

Skomer is now closed!

25,339 of you visited the island this year - our busiest ever year.

Please be assured that we monitor our visitor numbers carefully to ensure that visitors do not negatively affect our wildlife.

We thank you for continuing to support our work.
A photo of the departure blackboard which normally displays departure times. It reads "Total Visitors: 25,339. See you in 2026!" The boat can be seen leaving the bay behind.
