NEW OPINION PIECE
Are #caribou an effective umbrella for multi-species conservation?
☂️☔🌂

The message can be easily muddled.
The method used, relative area and amount, matters.

Using an index can help compare and contrast situations.

Each month of 2023/2024 I would look forward to the transformational training in conservation that COMPASS provides.

Now I'm incredibly proud that Claudia will receive this training too! Congratulations on making the 2025 cohort!

A must read article! It details so much of what I've been feeling since I was involved in a wildfire evacuation in 2023. Then dealing with trying to keep working in conservation with this feelings of despair hanging over me. We need to keep fighting for change.

@claudiahaas.bsky.social (#WILDlab PhD Candidate and northern ecologist) got the invitation to join the WCS Key Biodiversity Areas meeting in Ottawa last week as a northern representative.

What a phenomenal opportunity to be part of this collaborative and move KBAs forward!
wcscanada.org
It was fantastic to see reps from 24 orgs meet to discuss the future of Canada’s Key Biodiversity Areas.

The group discussed how to bring more awareness to these important areas, and ways to strengthen KBAs as a tool to support work by Indigenous communities & rightsholders.

Until next time! 🌎

Some of the best field work I got to do on Vancouver Island involved this project.

Telemetry on a mountain side for marmots = tough, but rewarding, stuff.
marmotrecovery.bsky.social
Need some GOOD news today? Consider, the Vancouver Island marmot once numbered fewer than 30 individuals in the wild. This year we are celebrating 381 wild-living marmots - the most ever counted for this rare species. Photo: John Deal.
A portrait of a Vancouver Island marmot pup with an adorable white nose, chocolate brown fur and white belly. "Adorable" is a fact. You know you want to snuggle it. It's not a good idea, and it wouldn't end well, but you want to. Photo by John Deal.
