Despite the widespread use of GLP-1 analogs, a significant gap remains: most preclinical and clinical studies fail to consistently include or analyze sex-disaggregated data. This oversight is critical, as women now represent over 75% of young patients using these therapeutics.

GLP-1 and Its Analogs: Does Sex Matter?
Abstract. While obesity and diabetes are prevalent in both men and women, some aspects of these diseases differ by sex. A new blockbuster class of therapeu

And honestly? Walking into a room full of brilliant, fast-talking journalists was intimidating. But they asked thought-provoking questions and made me feel welcome from the very first moment. I’m incredibly grateful for the experience.

📈Going viral shouldn’t be the main goal when telling science stories on social media. Impact should be. Inspiring curiousity, provoking thoughts, and helping people to understand the world better.

My main takeaways:

🤝 If we want better public understanding of science, we need better collaboration between scientists, communicators, and journalists, and that’s exactly what initiatives like the ESMH are working towards.
stinaborchers.bsky.social
At the summer school, I learned the feeling is mutual.
Many journalists find it frustrating or difficult to collaborate with scientists.
stinaborchers.bsky.social
As someone who usually trains scientists in communication, I often hear them say they’re afraid to engage with journalists: worried about being misquoted, misunderstood, or losing control of their message.

So this June, I had the privilege of co-hosting a masterclass on science storytelling on social media alongside Pierre Girard, as part of the summer school of the European Science Media Hub (ESMH), a program designed for young science journalists.

Fast forward to May, an email landed in my inbox:
"Would you like to speak at the ESMH Summer School at the European Parliament in Brussels?"
Safe to say, I couldn’t say no.
stinaborchers.bsky.social
I casually told a friend: "Wouldn’t it be cool to visit the European Parliament one day?" But when I said that I wasn't expecting I would actually visit as a speaker. 🇪🇺🤭🧵 #scicomm

🧠🍽️ A "hunger switch" in the nose? Smelling food activates a pathway from the olfactory bulb to medial septum glutamatergic neurons in mice, triggering anticipatory satiety: making them feel full before eating.
This circuit works in lean mice but is disrupted in obesity.

A food-sensitive olfactory circuit drives anticipatory satiety - Nature Metabolism
The authors describe a sensory circuit involving the medial septum (MS), where MS glutamatergic neurons integrate food odours to prime satiety and regulate nutrient intake.

🍽️ New study shows that “mini-ghrelins” (short peptides from ghrelin breakdown) can bind and block the ghrelin receptor without triggering its effects. Instead of being inactive leftovers, they may actively inhibit ghrelin’s hunger-inducing actions.

A mechano-sensitive ion channel found in adipose tissue. Sensory innervation, but for what? Adipocyte hypertrophy? Fibrosis? Still a lot biology to be discovered I think. We also see some PIEZO2 and PIEZO1 expression in our data!

A key role of PIEZO2 mechanosensitive ion channel in adipose sensory innervation
Wang et al. identified that the mechanoreceptor PIEZO2 is abundantly expressed in fat-innervating sensory neurons and plays a crucial role in mediating the adipose afferent pathway.
