Oh yes, I see the wrench too now, well spotted!

Slate is not uncommon here too, but this is certainly a glass.

Current thinking Obsidian Glass.

I suspect it was common in this era because of Queen Victoria -- it was on-trend.

I will post when I learn more.

Yes, this is the material. I'm sorry you found broken pieces :(
stjohnsgraveyard.bsky.social
The flower immortelle, yes, I think so?

We've been trying to identify the material all day, it looks and feels like glass. Our latest thinking is Obsidian Glass, which ground obsidian and sand of high silica composition. I know it has a specific name but Google isn't even bringing pictures of it.

Each leaf is handmade by a glass artist and is therefore unique.

Jedes Blatt ist von einer Glaskünstlerin handgefertigt und damit einzigartig.

Day 8 of #31DaysOfGraves - Glass

When visiting a graveyard, have you ever wondered what these flat marble plates, reminiscent of chopping boards, are?

They're the bases of Victorian/Edwardian "Immortelles" that once held fragile memorial ornaments under a glass dome. Not many now survive intact...

Day 8 of #31daysofgraves is #glass
The #grave of Irish author and poet Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) in Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris.
From 1914, in "Egyptian style".
Visitors would leave lipstick 💋 so it is now covered by glass to protect the stonework

The grave of Oscar Wilde in Pere Lachaise, Paris.
Designed by sculptor Jacob Epstein in 1914.
The epitaph reads, "And alien tears will fill for him, Pity's long-broken urn, For his mourners will be outcast men, And outcasts always mourn" taken Wilde's poem "The Sphinx" from 1894.
Egyptomania was a popular cultural phenomenon throughout the 19th century, especially in the Napoleonic era and again in the 1920s after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun by Howard Carter.
The glass barrier was put in place in 2014 to protect the stone from damage caused by the lipstick.

It is a beautiful monument.

The plight and injustice around the times of the #PendleWitches is commonly understood these days, but a monument this grand we do not have.

Thank you for posting.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 8 - Glass: Sun coming through the stained glass window of the Cory-Wright mausoleum at Highgate Cemetery #London
A large circular stained glass window reflects orange light on to the inside wall of a mausoleum. The text around the window reads "the eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms"

#31DaysofGraves Day 8 Glass... maybe

This is what I think is a Victorian etched black glass-front on the grave of William Bannister of Trafford House, #Burnley, his wife Sarah, Bertha, their daughter Mary Alice Wormwell Smith, and her son Alex Stewart Wormwell.

I am open to enlightenment!

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7 Angel

The archangel Gabriel with his scroll declaring that the will of God be done in calling Wilson Duerden of Little Clough Head, #GreatMarsden ( #Nelson ); his wife, Alice, and 3 of their daughters to rest.
The dedication to their faith clear from detail on their grave.

I see it now, but you can see the wren's camouflage doing a great job, because if you hadn't seen and told us I wouldn't have.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7 Angel.

The archangel Gabriel with a large scroll is probably watching over a man of God (and his family), or he may have been a writer of clear communication to identify Gabriel as his heavenly guide.
Unfortunately I couldn't get closer to the grave to learn more, but I will.

Men are often recognized for their military service and women as loving wives and mothers. Here, both husband and wife are remembered as Navajo Code talkers (see comments), albeit she served in the women's auxiliary, still a sign of gender division. #31daysofgraves 6. gender #photography
