lol, and who the fuck is this?
"The fact that this story engendered all the conversation and debate that it has feels like all the evidence you need that this was a legit line of reporting," one senior reporter told Semafor.

We have literal concentration camps for immigrants and it’s barely getting any coverage at all

We only know this man is in Gitmo because Noem tweeted a propaganda photo that included him and his sister saw it. He has no criminal record. He entered the US in January and immediately made an appointment with CBP to claim asylum. They sent him to a concentration camp bc of his basketball tattoo.
Venezuelan Migrant Sent to Guantánamo Bay Is ‘Not a Criminal,’ Family Pleads (Gift Article)
Luis Alberto Castillo arrived in the United States so that he could “give everything to his son,” said his sister. Then, while scrolling on TikTok, she found out he was headed to Guantánamo.

Posters on this app have had a better grasp on our political reality than basically everyone by employing this One Weird Trick - taking the President seriously when he tells everyone the things he’s going to do

this is where the rubber meets the road. NIH doesn't just fund research univs and hospitals in blue states. if anything they're most important to regional economies in the reddest states and districts.

Impact of NIH cut starting to sink in

Here's Sen. Katie Britt urging "a smart, targeted approach" in order to protect important research at UA-Birmingham, a top NIH recipient

Also, as article notes, the state's largest employer

DOGE plans to slash about as much ($4B) from NIH, and hence from universities and medical centers, as the government gave SpaceX ($3.8B) last year.

It's not about the money and government "waste."

It's never been about the money or government "waste."

Elon Musk wants to cut government spending. Tesla and SpaceX benefit from it
Over the last 16 years, Musk's business deals with the government total nearly $20 billion, according to federal contracting data.

Yes, seriously, to them. In his 2023 book Hegseth called West Point "a Marxist indoctrination camp churning out little Che Guevarras"

The latest from Hegseth.

In my experience, the students at our service academies are perfectly capable of loving their country without being fed a syrupy, agitprop version of their nation’s history. Let’s give them that much credit. Are we seriously afraid they’ll secretly go Commie?

The only group for whom this is sustainable is the news media establishment who can’t see an emperor BF-naked in front of them.
svmiller.com
Bears repeating that this isn’t sustainable. Not for the Canadian/Mexican publics infused with anti-American sentiment or the MAGA faithful who will want Dear Leader to put up or shut up with his signature policy and the manna it rains down from heaven. This equilibrium has a short shelf life.

I do not have a source specifically to confirm this, but I’m 100% confident that DOGE does not have a COBOL programmer, let alone someone who could remotely understand these systems.

This is a doubly bad sign about the havoc that appointees like Patel, Hegseth, and Vought could wreak. We were told Wiles was going to discipline and organize the second term Trump operation. Instead it's just maniacs running wild while grandpa signs things and watches television.

I think this is true, but there's an important extension here: Trump doesn't care what Elon is doing.

On some level, that's more troubling than if Trump DID know and was signing off on it.

who wants to take a guess as to how many news stations carried any, at all, of the Dem USAID protest/rally that included several members of Congress

when you perceive that "Dems aren't doing anything" you need to understand how much work the word 'perceive' is doing there & what biases that factors

they do not seem to think that civil society is real and their mental model of the world holds that people are drones who will do what they’re told
theophite.bsky.social
why is Elon Musk obsessed with gaining access directly to the systems which approve Treasury payments? and why are they trying so hard to shutter USAID? it's because they think it's the machine that pays the protesters, and they're trying to turn it off.

This makes ZERO sense. Sovereign wealth funds exist to invest a nation’s foreign currency holdings from running trade surpluses. The U.S. has a net negative foreign reserve balance, with U.S. dollars held abroad, as a function of its reserve currency status.

One of the things that makes it so hard to deal with Trump supporters/media is that they seem to actively revel in being made to look like gullible rubes.
svmiller.com
Caveats being:

1) we know in the IR literature that leaders horny for a deal are likely prone to take bad deals. That could be a problem for the U.S. for something important.

2) who’s to say target publics in places like Mexico don’t punish their leaders for the optics as this repeats.
