ticketmaster hates me (the feeling is mutual)

(I get this across multiple devices and browsers, and have for months or longer, so I suspect the 'unusual behavior' is blocking ads and tracking nonsense, or something of that nature...)

Taking this on should be a special project for Virginia electeds like @markwarner.bsky.social, @kaine.senate.gov and @beyer.house.gov. This affects all Americans, but your constituents have a front row experience with all of this.

At its core, the militarization of U.S. cities is an affront to Democratic, and democratic, governance—a gambit to set up a national police force, with the president as its chief, where neither the Constitution nor federal law allow it.

For @nymag.com, I probe how to put a stop to this perversion.

Please be aware that there is a scrapple sculpting contest at the Reading Terminal Market tomorrow at noon. (If you don’t know what this means you probably don’t want to.)

This is what's in store for opening day of the new Commanders stadium unless we start building a second station right away

Closing the larger entrance for the Navy Yard-Ballpark station for escalator repair 1 week before Nationals Park hosts 3 sold out events leads to this.

Dangerous bottleneck on the street level. Bottleneck at the machines. And near empty cars because folks can’t actually get to the platform in time.

I don't even like those things when they're going in a straight line and on the right side of the road.

Had one of those double decker beasts shimmy by in Center City Philly the other day and I got fully on the other side of the sidewalk away from it...

Tom Sietsema is leaving his job as restaurant critic; maybe it's time to call the paper the Washington Past.

This point has to be made vigorously and regularly in the courts. Over and over.

(And we need electeds to start repeating it, too. All of this reflexive bipartisan support for the impunity of law enforcement and state surveillance has to be a casualty of this era.)

My new @thedispatchmedia.bsky.social piece tells how DHS continues to deny that citizens have a right to videorecord its agents and raids even in the face of overwhelming court precedent that the First Amendment protects their right to do so. Nor is it just a matter of positions taken in court. /5
DHS Says Videotaping ICE Agents Is Illegal. Federal Courts Disagree.
Filming law enforcement serves important goals central to a free republic.

I never thought of it quite like this, but the world seems to be made up of two kinds of people. Those who find the diversity in the world to be comforting and approach difference with curiosity even if they are cautious, and the opposite. Those scared by difference, who go in assuming the worst.

I love living in a city full of immigrants and tons and tons of people who are not at all like me and not like each other. It makes us all better and it makes our city better. I know I’m preaching to the choir by saying this on the lib app but I sometimes just get so overwhelmed by how special it is

I will never, ever stop singing the praises of neighborhood bars within walking distance. There is nothing sexier than knowing that you can just walk 5-10 minutes there and 5-10 minutes back, no driving or parking or DD necessary.

Thank you to the Alaska Raptor Center for telling the truth that birders already knew: every bald eagle cry you hear in an advertisement is a red-tailed hawk.

Meanwhile in DC it's chilly enough that I'm wearing a hoodie tonight for the third night on a row.

(Still wearing shorts, though -- you can take the kid out of the Midwest, but…)

Twitter I believe allows 1,000 chars in alt text — here it's 2K.

really wish reporters — especially those posting screenshots of _documents_ — could take 15 seconds out of their rush to be first to BREAK NEWS and add ALT text to their images.

(Admittedly, sometimes documents, even text ones, are built as images or don't allow copying. This isn't one of them.)

[same image, with ALT text]

(seriously, guys, it takes 15 seconds. just copy the text and add it as ALT text.)
The analysis that follows is necessarily lengthy, as we must address the parties' numerous arguments in each of the cases involved. But the length of our analysis should not be mistaken for a sign that the fundamental question that these cases raise about the scope of birthright citizenship is a difficult one. It is not, which may explain why it has been more than a century since a branch of our government has made as concerted an effort as the Executive Branch now makes to deny Americans their birthright.

How the hell is this shutdown our fault if Republicans can’t be bothered to show up
🚨🚨The House reading clerk just read a letter from House Speaker Mike Johnson where he declares a 'District Work Period' from October 7 to October 13.

That would mean no votes until mid-month.
