Is that urban planner yelling into the Internet again?

Detroiter from St. Louis

Posting about city services & urban planning from a justice perspective, the Rust Belt, community outreach, transportation, historic preservation, and cats.

Hi new people! Nice to meet you.

I am a Detroit area urban planner, transit advocate, and historic preservation professional.

#1 fangirl of the Open Meetings Act.

Come for the local government commentary, stay for the everything else (It’s mostly everything else.)
Part of this guy’s belly appears to have been shaved.

Given his lore, we theorize that they started prepping to spay the “mom cat” that was brought in, and then someone noticed he had balls
Meet our new family member.

Rescuers found him living behind a liquor store near Livernois & 6 Mile.

They thought he was a girl because he was protecting and raising 3 sick kittens despite being only 6 months old himself. He’s not the mom or the dad, he’s the dad who stepped up 😭

Now he is home!

seems like they use it more to educate kids about the hydrology of the bay area, but the bay model is way more interesting as a quirk in the history/practice of science and engineering—there’s like a 35 year period max where “huge building to model tides, salinity, turbidity, etc.” made sense

I used to hang out with this thing in an old former fire station as a part of my old job.

Mostly had to go there for “starting a bikeshare” purposes but a lot of the time it was just me and this Bertoia.

Glad to see it’s been restored and is on display again

Lost Harry Bertoia Sculpture Rediscovered in Michigan, Now Installed at Hudson’s Detroit
A long-lost Harry Bertoia sculpture was found in a Southfield basement and restored. It now hangs in the new Hudson’s Detroit building above GM’s headquarters.

This guy has been all the news here in our little town. He ran aground under the bridge two days ago in his homemade house boat. He had set sail from Windsor/Detroit and is destined for Mexico. He made it out to the open waters of Lake Huron yesterday apparently. Godspeed sir.

Been thinking about this a lot with a gale warning on Lake Huron!
There’s a wild story playing out on Great Lakes ship watching and coastal Facebook groups right now.

There’s a guy with a homemade house boat who’s attempting to traverse the lakes.

The boat is called Neverlanding and it set sail from Windsor, ON. It appears he has 1-2 50hp motors.

I’d suggest offering more than one thing- hey can I get you something? We have beer, coke, lemonade and water!
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

I am glad they did this.

Man.

This beautiful historic church is right by where I went to grade school. To me, it has always been there.

It was heavily damaged in the tornado this year, and a woman who was inside died.

They will be demolishing the building and rebuilding on the site.

Oh damn someone fixed up that house that was seemingly full of objects / had stacks of objects out front at times. It seemed to exist in a space between occupied & unoccupied, it was hard to read.

At the right is the apse of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Can we talk about the fact that there's a company that wants to block out the sun AND a company that wants to put mirrors in space so you can aim sunbeams in the middle of the night if you want to and I need EVERYBODY to quit torment-nexusing the sky?
A 25-person startup is developing technology to block the sun and turn down the planet’s thermostat.

The stakes are huge — and the company and its critics say regulations need to catch up.
