His writings on how design informs the pedestrian experience and Why Small Towns Are Laid Out Like That were really instructive for young me, but attempting to listen to his podcast convinced me that he should not attempt to have opinions on other things outside his central theory.

I was seriously considering writing “I don’t know, Jeff” (the professor knew me) but no for real Kunstler is urbanism’s one trick pony and it’s not that hard to write what the trick is if you’re familiar with his general deal. I wasn’t wrong

In college we had a test with an essay question about the only chapter I hadn’t read in the James Howard Kunstler book we were assigned.

I freaked out, but the thing about Kunstler is dude basically only has one argument about everything, so I wrote a sarcastic version of that argument. Got an A

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

The 1900 block of Montgomery was Rob Powers’s thesis site.

It’s wild to see the progression from how dense it originally was, to how dense it was in its pre-McKee state when Rob wrote about it, to now.

Homes, places where people lived their lives. All gone.
