Is that urban planner yelling into the Internet again?

Detroiter from St. Louis

Posting about city services & urban planning from a justice perspective, the Rust Belt, community outreach, transportation, historic preservation, and cats.

Hi new people! Nice to meet you.

I am a Detroit area urban planner, transit advocate, and historic preservation professional.

#1 fangirl of the Open Meetings Act.

Come for the local government commentary, stay for the everything else (It’s mostly everything else.)
Bad air quality in the Detroit area today btw—all the snow melting at once has released all the pollution it had absorbed.

It's not just you, it is actually gross air!

Air filters and masks help if u got em

Pouring one out for Virginia at Jean's, New Deluxe Bakery, and the Ramadan Buffet at Aladdin today.
I am neither Muslim nor Catholic, I just lived in Hamtramck and
Banglatown for a very long time.

I’m happy when my neighbors are having a good time and I will eat all of their holiday food

I got to meet with Rev Jackson in a smallish group setting in Racine, WI with some local politicos and activists in 2012 and this is how he started the meeting. He was clearly starting to lose a step by then, but he was as powerful in his delivery then as in the 70s.

Rest in Power, Jesse.
I don’t know who needs to hear Jesse Jackson leading the kids on Sesame Street in this beautiful call-and-response reminding them that every child is somebody, but here it is

For those wondering how the dual holiday is gonna work in Hamtramck today, generally Paczki Day is a daydrinking celebration, and Ramadan kicks off at night.

So gonna be lots of people in a celebratory mood, but the crowds peak at different times.

Holy shit this comparison chart

No wonder it feels like we're all passing around the same $20
Fascinating chart with one outlier: Warren Buffett.

At the low end, giving 0.06% of one's wealth is equivalent to:

Net worth -> Lifetime Giving
50K->$30
100K->$60
500K->$300
$1M->$600

Most folks give far more by % in a *single year*.

When it comes to the race for Governor, I'm voting for whomever is going to protect marginalized Michiganders. Duggan doesn't pass that test for me.

I also find it funny that he says he's nonpartisan but he's raking in MAGA donor cash & almost all his positions fall in line with MAGA.
Duggan’s inconsistency on trifecta raises alarms for Dems: ‘I really don’t know who Mike Duggan is’ • Michigan Advance
At the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Policy Conference at the end of January, former Detroit mayor and independent gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan railed on state legislature Democrats for fa...

Looks like Ring cancelling the Flock partnership is helping alter the narrative. Headline after headline reads “Amazon cancels partnership with surveillance company” when a more accurate read is that 2 surveillance companies pause proposed partnership.

Somehow unexpected bummer to see local history websites and pages using AI to either “tune up” photos or to wholly imagine what an incident may have looked like.

I would rather know what visual info we actually have, even if it’s choppy! This stuff is gonna get passed along as if it’s real

St Louis City still has a bad problem with this. Demo companies are required to use misters but enforcement is entirely based on CSB system w/ follow up days later. The complaints get closed w/ no issue found. It's going to get worse because of tornado related demo. So many STL kids have asthma.

There was an air quality monitor near a demolition site not far from my house last year. It went *bonkers* during the demo, and the building wasn't even super big.

I know they like to act like modern demolition is fully abated and doesn’t kick up dust with bad stuff in it, but as a person with an ungodly amount of allergies I’m here to tell you that that’s not true lol
