"Discussion touched on many points, with an amicable resolution of differences. Conduct is fully legal." unfortunately goes hard as fuck when the Palace Guards come to interrogate you.

Maybe Frey is fine with this, not opening that can of worms, but the larger point is he could give a direct order for MPD to do the exact opposite and not only would the end result be the same, he'd be powerless to do anything about it because of how we've structured local govt-PD relations

It's not an excuse, but it is worth remembering that mayors in most cities very much do not have control over their police departments if the mayor doesn't like something the cops want to do, a phenomenon that would be a red alert civ-mil alarm with the military but something we all accept w/cops

wouldn't you know it there's literally so many fics about this very premise

Todd grew in mass to compensate for the loss of the other white supremacists Walt took out. Similar dynamics may be observed in real life: racists often only feel the need to work out in organized groups.

*reads post* haha yeah pretty much. The internal war at State in 1949-1950 is a miniature of the great failure of American postwar policy in thinking that the overwhelming threat we faced was simply another Munich & another France.

But in retrospect, the original memo was written in July, by the time the decision to cross the 38th parallel was made on September 11, Butler and the PPS had largely been sidelined. As the historian Melvyn Leffler would observe, “the taste of victory was irresistible.”

30 years later Omar Bradley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time stated, "In retrospect, this paper is full of good sense." He would also blame States leadership for not doing more and undercutting the recommendations of their own policy analysts

There is no evidence that Truman or MacArthur ever read the memorandum. Truman never left any record as to if he had any personal doubts about crossing the 38th parallel. MacArthur on the other hand insisted even up until 300,000 Chinese troops were inside Korea that China would not intervene.

To this day, It’s still not entirely clear how widely the memo circulated. It was originally intended for the American UN delegation, General MacArthur, and some members of the NSC, but my research also found that the JCS and key staff received the memo as well…

Not just terrain, but the extent to you really have no idea of what's happening at a given time.

I'll talk to friends who are well-read, and they'll express complete bafflement when I try to explain to them that people firing in a general direction of where they took contact is a normal thing.

I mean, dear god yes - but that also is true within the joint force.

I mean I have had arguments with people on here who have no understanding of how terrain works...and I've had arguments with USARPAC, who have no understanding of how terrain works.

I'm not super sure how you can. There's basic aspects of the military that don't translate well unless you experience them for yourself like how difficult it actually is to move X brigade to Y position or "how do I return fire at an adversary I can't see who is 1.5 miles away from me"

Soldiers love a lot of the aspects war and it's something that people are really skittish about talking about because it makes you seem like a bad person.

It's deeply imbued with meaning and tends to provide a lot of excitement! It's just the nature of the beast!
