This was the best. Except that we couldn’t figure out how to get off school district list so finally just canceled landline. Double win!

One of the first ever appointees to the current Genetic Predoctoral Training Program T32 from NIGMS. Proud of them all. And congrats to Monica!

The NSF posted an announcement on Sept 8th with “full solicitation coming” and no indication of the changes- consistent with a chaotic process occurring to make these decisions. At least they delayed the deadlines and have now provided reference letter deadline (earlier than application deadline).
tamaragenes.bsky.social
Awesome to see they will award up to 3000 fellowships! Hope NSF posts full announcement- including recommendation deadline- soon! Last year recs were due before GFRP deadline so students should be requesting them now.

NSF GRFP announcement was posted! Have not read the details to see if any changes from previous years...

🧪 And House appropriators say: no cuts to NIH budget!

House subcommittee version just came out (link below). Holds NIH flat at $48 billion.

To be clear: this is far from over. But a good sign that science still matters across both sides of aisle.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS!!

So fun to read this interview as Mansuo was my classmate a "few" years ago. Her description of how we were encouraged to solve big, difficult questions resonates- as does the place being cohesive and highly collaborative. What a special place Princeton MolBio was in the 90's.

Ten years ago, I restarted career in the Neuroscience program at Emory. I wanted the freedom drive my own research and chase what interested me. Thanks, @tamaragenes.bsky.social, Alberto Stolfi, @vansciver.bsky.social, and all the mentors for the training and support that brought me here.

NIH is accepting comments about limiting research publication costs. 1. Disallow pub costs, 2. $2K limit, 3. $3K if reviewers are compensated, 4. 0.8% of award (so $250K grant can pay $2K/year on pubs), 5. $6K limit on pub + limit on % of grant spent on pub costs. 🧪

An additional factor is that Emory sent an alert at 5:03 (through app and email) whereas my friends at the CDC did not get anything for another 10 minutes. They report people running inside buildings yelling for CDC employees to move away from windows. Media likely first heard about Emory alert
tamaragenes.bsky.social
Indeed, the CVS where the shooter reportedly shot from is in a complex called Emory Point, which is a mixed use development not part of campus. Emory is very close- but the CDC is closer- and reports are it’s buildings were the ones shot. And the employees there are still locked on lock down.
