So many American far-right Catholic weirdos these days are just Protestants who converted for the vibes once they learned people thought megachurches were cringe, & didn't do any further research.

I was mired in evangelical culture back when Matt Walsh was still a popular conservative Calvinist blogger. Seeing him pivot to Catholicism only to be constantly furious that it isn't more Calvinist will always be funny to me.

Far-right Catholics freaking out about the Pope doing normal Pope things will always be entertaining.

The Pope blessed some water? Can you even imagine?
Matt Walsh: Horrific. The whole thing. Pope Leo blesses a block of ice and then stands there while these communist freaks do some kind of weird pagan Earth worshipping hippy ritual. The leader of the Catholic Church shouldn’t be anywhere near this nonsense. What the hell are we doing here

Pay attention to the language that will be used by much of the media.

The Global Sumud Flotilla never entered Israeli waters.

They are in international waters attempting to reach Palestinian waters.

Israel is once again breaking international law

So, I'm making a video game based on Palestinian folklore. It's called Thursday of the Dead, and you can talk to a Palestinian ghouleh. It will have branching narrative, and art all made by a human (me). I need exactly $100 to launch it on Steam when it's finished.

Especially if you feel "stuck" in your life then it's especially galling to see people who are certainly struggling but in very different ways refuse to accept what they're given. What's even more unforgivable is that they're willing to take risks to grow...

You can tell a lot about a society by its folk devils so it's interesting that ours seem to be migrants, trans folks and students: very different groups but the common denominator seems to be... self-improvement? You can kinda see why they would elicit resentment in an aging, sclerotic society...

Jeremy Dutcher was a visiting lecturer at UofG years ago & John & I managed to get along to an intimate gig he performed on campus. Incredible to hear those songs performed live & to hear him speak about the process of recovering & reimagining them.

I feel like not nearly enough people understand this:

YES! THIS on GenAI!

Please read this absolutely splendid piece of writing that had me cheering, a little bit weepy, and writing in the margins:

"An extraordinary amount of money is spent by the AI industry to ensure that acquiescence is the only plausible response. But marketing is not destiny."

as an author of a book on reparations I am intimately familiar with the move people make from "the thing you want isn't politically viable right now" to "you shouldn't want it, talk about wanting it, or even think about it" but it never stops being weird to me

It is actually peak absurdity that we still have people arguing that voters should bend to the positions of their political representatives instead of the other way around.

And as always this is me saying this as someone who is subject to the barest of bare minimum requirements due to being white, American, a native English-speaker etc. Friends from other places & I have extensively compared notes & it's even harder if you don't fit that description.

Hard to overstate just how much the admin involved in staying in the UK as an immigrant is itself a full-time job, not just the applications themselves but also the constant scrutiny & staying abreast of the constantly moving goalposts which are rarely ever publicly reported on.

Shabana Mahmood believes immigration is too high, a person whose parents migrated from Pakistan and who lived in Saudi Arabia as a child

Dehumanisation as policy.
It ignores people's actual lives and experiences in favour of some sick idea that migrants are just resources to be used and discarded at will.
It is incredible how Labour has become, in practice, the most anti-immigration government in decades.

It really is just relentless the constant dehumanisation in this country. Prove you deserve to be here. Prove you deserve to be cared for. Prove your gender. Prove you deserve to have human rights. Prove you deserve to stay after a whole decade. It just chisels away at your humanity

Just fuck off with this. How about start the conversation by highlighting how much immigrants contribute to the UK - not least by propping up the NHS and social care system!

Also - forced volunteering is not volunteering, it's unpaid labour.

reposting with alt text because I think the choice to include homophobia and transphobia in particular here is actually very much worth drawing attention to. nuns emphatically stating that those “do not reflect the qualities of a saint” is a very clear callout of Cardinal Dolan
<
Sisters of Charity, New York 20h • ©
Several of us watched Cardinal Dolan's recent FOX interview, where he referred to Charlie Kirk as "a modern-day St. Paul." The Cardinal praised Mr. Kirk's conviction and willingness to speak about the Lord and for being a model for young people looking for meaning in their lives.
We grieve every loss of life and unequivocally condemn the killing of Mr. Kirk.
What Cardinal Dolan may not have known is that many of Mr. Kirk's words were_ marked by racist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, by violent pro-gun advocacy, and by the promotion of Christian nationalism. These prejudicial words do not reflect the qualities of a saint. To compare Mr. Kirk to St. Paul risks confusing the true witness of the Gospel and giving undue sanction to words and actions that hurt the very people Jesus calls us to love.
Just last week, Cardinal Dolan joined us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the canonization of our Foundress, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Elizabeth's legacy is not one of exclusion or hatred, but of radical welcome, tireless service, and unwavering love of neighbor. Many of Mr. Kirk's words stand in stark contrast to the charity and compassion that defined those of Elizabeth Seton. For generations, the Sisters of Charity of New York have cared for immigrant families arriving with nothing but hope.
While our direct service has changed, our commitment to those families endures. They deserve true examples of discipleship, not false prophets.
In this moment, we reaffirm our mission: to walk with all people who are poor and marginalized, to welcome immigrants and refugees, to defend the dignity of LGBTQ+ persons, and to labor for peace in a world saturated with violence. These are the marks of authentic discipleship. These are the qualities of saints.
We urge our Church leadership, including Cardinal Dolan, to lift up witnesses whose lives truly reflect the Gospel of Jesus Christ - lives of humility, justice, compassion, and peace.
We will continue to pray for Mr. Kirk, his family and for all who mourn his loss.
