The difference is that the Democrats are a bog-standard center-left pro-democracy party actually interested in the median voter. The GOP is now a far right authoritarian party that does not believe in democracy & is interested only in the median member of the Herrenvolk.
In 2010, Dems candidates distanced themselves from Obama to try to avoid thermostatic backlash and punishment for the ACA. This was seen as smart strategy at the time.

The GOP in 2026 has decided to go 100% in on the most unpopular policies, figures, and ideas in politics. MN gonna be D+15 in Nov

👇🎯 Not once has the national media asked a GOP politician about affording ICE the way Biden/the Dems were asked about the cost of
student loan debt relief & literally everything else for the last 50 years.
Folks are dying from winter storms and the power has been out for a week but the government can spend big money on detention camps. bsky.app/profile/cost...
How many times in your life have you heard a member of Congress or someone on TV say “we can’t afford it” when talking about something small but very important? It’s been happening my entire life. We can’t afford it? They’re putting seven times the annual budget of the EPA into immigrant detention.

Twenty-three years ago today, seven astronauts never made it home when we lost space shuttle Columbia. It was a tragedy that changed space exploration and reminded us of its incredible risks. I think about their families every Feb. 1st. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Unmarked car, no lights or police insignia. Masked armed men leap out. Victim not in the act of committing any crime. This is not how a serious federal law enforcement agency acts in a free society.

How is this not supposed to be a “right wing paramilitary force loyal to the regime”?
This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

This is Minnesota. No one for any reason intentionally leaves their car on the side of the road w/the doors open in January

March 3, 2025: Bondi says she has a "truckload" of new Epstein evidence she will make public ...
Yes, this friendly 2019 Jeffrey Epstein email exchange is about the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft. But it's more important who it is WITH: Brad Karp, the chairman of Paul, Weiss. And Karp was still chairman when Paul, Weiss became the first law firm to cave to Trump's demands in 2025. 1/

👇🎯🧵 He's been violating the emoluments clause in plain sight since the second he first walked into the WH. He spent Biden's entire presidency not being punished for a coup attempt. Etc. Things have accelerated rapidly since January 2025, but democratic backsliding was well under way before that.
US democratic backsliding looks very fast if you mark the start at 2025. But it’s been going since 2017, so I disagree with
@donmoyn.bsky.social @jburnmurdoch.ft.com etc.

Abuse of emergency powers, normalization of bribery, de facto death of War Powers Act all term 1.

Immunity case in the interim.
New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. 🧵

Seeing that photo of Obama putting the Medal of Freedom on Tom Homan circulate again. It's fake. Homan did get a civil service award during the Obama administration, but it wasn't the Medal of Freedom, it wasn't a medal (it was a certificate), and Obama didn't present it to him in person.

Let's speak plainly.

In a legitimate criminal cases, political appointees don't have to first hollow out U.S. Attorney offices of objecting career prosecutors with integrity; federal judges don't kill the cases at the cradle, and the government doesn't fight tooth and nail to revive them.
