Wondering where we are on the spectrum of Idiocracy, 1930s Germany, and the end of the world, while hoping it's not too late to reverse this.

Amen.
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

“Every time I listen to a lawyer-trained representative saying we should criminalize free speech in some way, I think to myself, that law school failed,” Sotomayor said while speaking on a panel Tuesday morning at New York Law School.

The justice, in public remarks, didn’t name the attorney general, who has come under fire for comments to target people over “hate speech.”

Trump is again threatening Chicago with a takeover on social media. We will again say those who trade liberty for the illusion of temporary safety deserve neither. We are not, and will not become, a military state. Remember freedom is something they can never take away, no matter what they tell you!

President Trump’s federal takeover of D.C.’s local police is unprecedented. “The last person who asserted the authority to use military personnel for routine law enforcement anywhere in the country for any reason was King George,” a legal scholar said.

Maryland dad and union brother Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being quite literally persecuted for his innocence.
It's worth reiterating that the administration has never wavered from the position that it sent Kilmar Abrego Garcia to an El Salvador prison by accident. Everything they've done since is calculated to obscure that and punish him for existing as an example of their own stupidity and callousness.

They're still likely to completely ignore even overwhelming commentary against this, as they have with previous bills of this type. Still, I hope as many people show up today (or comment online) as possible, as it will leave a public record that TX Republicans don't care about those they represent.
🚨 ACTION ALERT: SB8, the so-called Bathroom Bill, will be heard tomorrow, Friday, Aug 22nd at 8AM in the House State Affairs Committee, Reagan Building JHR 140.

They’re already talking about limiting testimony 2 HOURS! As such it is critical we show up in force. ✊🏽

I couldn't sleep, but this doesn't help: it appeared sanity *might* have prevailed on redistricting, so instead, the New National Socialist party decided to subvert the democratic process to ram through a favorite form of state sponsored bullying while people are distracted. #whack-a-mole-politics

Just downright cruel. I pray those affected can make it through the next 41.5 months, and if the courts can't fix this that the next administration promptly restores their benefits (with back pay). Sadly, the next admin is going to have a lot of cruel, senseless policies to reverse (if reversible).
Nothing— and I mean nothing— about this decision is more than the bare desire to harm.

The job market sucks, the news headlines suck, and it's one of those days that I wish I could just crawl under a rock and hide out until Lisa Simpson become President (Or Pete Buttigieg, or whoever gets the task of trying to put this country back together).

These laws scare me, especially in light of the recent authoritarian impulses of many western governments. Create tools that parents can use to better control their kids' online activity, teach older kids to protect themselves, and keep the internet free of censorship and ever expanding tracking.

While I don't know the context (e.g. is there a history of R rated behavior at the event), As I watch potentially "safe" countries in Central America for signs that they too are sliding into Trumpism and loss of civil iberties, things like this concern me: ticotimes.net/2025/08/01/c...

This is starting to concern me more and more, and the usage creep is only going to increase if people don't demand these laws be reversed. Build a "minor mode" into consumer devices that parents can activate before giving the device to their kid, and let adults keep their privacy and freedom online

Not okay - especially given that many immigrants are being arrested on flimsy evidence or over minor technicalities. That said, as long as there's A/C, this *might* be okay for temporarily housing CONVICTED FELONS, and I can think of the first such felon who should be sent there...
