Just a nomad from Twitter (long time ago) and Instagram looking for the best place, always trying to restore what I have lost and also be in the center of the stream of time like I could not before social media.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 11 January 1922. Leonard Thompson (aged 14), became the 1st human to be successfully treated with insulin for Diabetes in a hospital in Toronto, Canada. Before then it was exceptional for people with Type 1 diabetes to live more than a year.

In case you are in need of intelligent comic relief - Sammy Obeid is great:

@icebird.bsky.social Just came across this and thought you might like that more inland peace&quiet as well (in case you have not seen it yet - looks like it went viral)
Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.

Kept musing on how far too much information is stored in people's phones and suspecting phones might replace ID cards in the future - turns out the future is already here.

Now I suspect future voting will be done via bots calculating how people will vote (like how chatbots etc. inform).
A longer post from me to start the year: the Dutch are panicking. Their digital ID system will soon fall under the control of an American company and far-reaching US government powers.

Why is that such a problem? And what does it mean for the UK?

Whenever things go from bad to worse, exactly the wrong people profit while the wrong people get killed/impoverished.

Also 'defense' almost always is an euphemism.
As far as I know, nothing like the 'shield' of starship Enterprise in Startrek has been invented (yet?).
(Would celebrate that)

A TV series based on this was very popular&seemed constantly on TV when I was a child in Germany (1960s/70s).
The Good Soldier Svejk so enthusiastically overperformed all his orders that he inadvertently kept sabotaging them.
It was very funny.
Today he would not stop at M when arresting presidents.
#OtD 3 Jan 1923 Jaroslav Hasek, author of classic anarchic comedy novel, The Good Soldier Svejk, died in the Czech village of Lipnice, aged 39. His novel mocked the absurdity of military and empire via the main character's enthusiasm for authority stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1018...

About 3 years ago, I came across a video clip in which a Venezuelan introduces a Swede to Venezuelan food.

As I love food, find culutral encounters interesting and also have been to Venezuela and eaten arepas, I was curious and watched:

Germany in the 1920s -especially Berlin- was such a vivid cultural place.

The majority of people lived in economic misery, though.

(There had been a steep rise during the last part of the 19th century, which, I just learned, caused feeling cocky&entering WWI overconfident just to lose twice/all)
