So the younger shooter, in a video submitted to the court, claims the shooting was aimed at the Zionist policies of Israel as a state. This is distinct from being an attack against Jewish people as a group. Once again the pro-Zionist coalition and right wing media jumped the gun and got it wrong.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.

Neutrality and pacifism are fantastic but i feel like the primary reason for Ireland to never join NATO is rarely mentioned: why on Earth would we enter a military alliance with Britain?

As someone who only observes British politics occasionally and with interest only insofar as it affects people in the north: surely you’d expect the Lib Dems to take the current opportunity far more vociferously than this?

Is “watching right-wing YouTubers” equivalent to gambling addiction, though? There are certainly similarities and overlaps but it would seem the dynamic is fundamentally different.
Like there is also a huge media-based pipeline of content designed to get men to gamble on sports but no one is postulating that this was a demand-driven phenomenon of men with "having excess money" problems.

Not to go all Bluesky on this person but “time to live with the consequences!“ is such classic American arrogance! There are consequences to Venezuelans too!
The Venezuela shit doesn’t even feel real because they’ve made zero effort to actually gin up public support and make any kind of justification for it.

This is what the American people voted for though whether they realized it or not.

Time to live with the consequences!

If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

Precisely
'trump & global rising fascism is a random inexplicable aberration from politics as usual' is what you need to believe to defend the political neoliberal mainstream to yourself & others.

Sure, but ask yourself this: if we reached a point where AI art was actually really really good, would you be ok with it then?

In other words: the fear with AI isn’t that it’s bad, it’s that it’s good!
I see a lot of arguments against AI art isn't about the end product, but more importantly it's about the creative process. This is true, but also we shouldn't ignore that the AI end product is 99.999 times out of 100 lousy.

No. There IS an empirical and historical materialist explanation for why the world is the way it is. It‘s our job to uncover that explanation, not to simply give up.
Everyone wants to make “sense” of things, but we are all currently hostage to an irrationalist epistemic environment. You might as well just read the entrails of a slaughtered goat to divine where events are headed.

FWIW, I think sentiments like “Israel's actions have stirred the antisemitic cauldron very thoroughly” are part of the problem.
Israel's actions have stirred the antisemitic cauldron very thoroughly which is a tragedy for the vast majority of Jews worldwide who do not support Zionism or Netanyahu's actions.

Actually really shocked at the amount of Irish pro-Palestine activists I know expressing pretty blatantly anti-semitic views the last two days. Are ye well

counterpoint: you don’t actually need to spend all of your time arguing with people you disagree with on the Internet
People are losing their minds on Twitter and becoming more trick lazy, sloppy and radicalised because the libs are not there to argue against and challenge. Come back.

Great thread about Irish “democracy” really works. Worth a read.
Coffee thoughts:

Ireland is a polity where you can go and visit a Minister in a constituency office on a weekend to ask for help filling in a form.

The distance to/from officeholders is effectively zero.

But the distance for most people from *power* can be (invisible to them) huge.

I obviously support a ban on fox hunting but by this metric almost our entire culture is ”not traditionally Irish”.
#Foxhunting with hounds and horses was invented in England in the 16 century. It was imported to #Ireland during colonial time. It is NOT an Irish tradition. Contact your TDs today and tell them to vote for a ban on Dec 17th. See sample letter and details in our bio.

If I may give one brief note of pessimism for those celebrating this as the inevitable death of AI: organisations are notoriously slow to adopt new working methods. There’s no reason to believe this is simply because businesses don’t want to use AI
Three years into the generative-AI wave, demand for the technology seems surprisingly flimsy
Investors expect AI use to soar. That’s not happening
Recent surveys point to flatlining business adoption
