Sanctions, Shipping, and Space Marines, oh my.
Every sanctions professional just died a little inside.
WELKER: What is the national emergency that justifies this new slate of tariffs?

BESSENT: The national emergency is avoiding a national emergency

Jesus. It’s like they were basically just reenacting the Gestapo officer’s MO from Inglorious Bastards.

Great thread, and a good reminder that everyone has a part to play in defending democracy.
I’m seeing lots of people on here misunderstand the purpose of ICE watch.

It’s de-escalation. And it’s grounded in the social science of violence. 🧵

I mean, maybe on the bright side at least they were better than your local SWAT team serving a warrant because they didn’t arbitrarily shoot the dog?
House Intel Chair Rick Crawford on Trump executing a coup in Venezuela during a military operation that killed 80 people: "This was a DOJ operation in that this was essentially serving a warrant"

I’m probably dim for connecting the dots a day late, but tbf I raid about yesterday’s airstrikes after pounding two beers while my kids watched rhe SpongeBob movie.

The point of conducting the strikes on Christmas was to deliberately position the admin as defenders of “Christianity.”

Some observations, beyond the obvious:

a) I think one of this administrations downfalls is going to be the giddiness that they advertise their lawlessness - from snuff films to human rights abuses, and

b) props to the 60mn team for featuring the work of students trained in OSINT.

I’m gonna fucking laugh, and then cry, then probably both, if they try to enact a “blockade” with TWEA.
What oil, what land, what assets did Venezuela steal from the US? And when? A social media post from an alternative reality.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

Perhaps before Hegseth starts reminding retirees that they are subject to the UCMJ, he should also remember adultery is prohibited under the UCMJ. Just sayin…
Hegseth is now threatening to recall Sen. Mark Kelly to active duty in order to court martial him.

I have been charged in a federal indictment sought by the Department of Justice.

This political prosecution is an attack on all of our First Amendment rights. I’m not backing down, and we’re going to win.

In October, 'Washington Post' editorials fail to disclose Bezos interests

My story for NPR

'Washington Post' editorials omit a key disclosure: Bezos' financial ties
Three times in the past two weeks, editorials at the 'Washington Post' failed to disclose that they focused on matters in which owner Jeff Bezos had a material interest.

Yeah, but these are pretty half baked and just a big catchup to OFSI. How do you sanction Lukoil but not Litasco? And yes, it is pretty easy to prove Lukoil has a direct, indirect, or contingent interest in their marketing subsidiary, but this is pretty low effort. Reminds me of Sovcomflot.
I was never so happy to say that I was wrong: Trump actually did it. He imposed new sanctions on Russia.

Having just spent half a day in an inflatable, I’m 100% sure the only crime you can commit in an inflatable is dying of heat stroke.
Well, you can finally cross “I’ve seen a handcuffed, inflatable penis” off your bucket list

My favorite fact about the politics of coal is that Broadway alone employs more people than the coal industry, and my field of AML employs vastly more that coal. This is why our country should be a normal democracy and do away with the electoral college.
there are almost certainly more people — more blue collar laborers, specifically — involved in the cultivation and production of chardonnay grapes and wine than in coal
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

Critical part of the President's new $100,000 charge for H1-B visas: The Administration can also offer a $100,000 discount to any person, company, or industry that it wants. Replacing rules with arbitrary discretion.
