A thread 🧵 on the importance of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, from the point of view of Washington State (unofficially, of course; this is just my opinion). Don't just take my word for it, though - read the NTHMP 2024 annual report here: www.weather.gov/media/nthmp/... 🌊

Joking aside, temperature scales for what it feels like outside are totally relative, and the one thing that would be toughest to me, growing up in a country that uses Farhenheit, would be knowing which layers to bring when given a forecast in Celsius.

Doable, but initially frustrating.
theterbush.bsky.social
Excellent take on the two typically-used temperature systems, but it doesn't take into account that neither scale can compare to the simplicity of the scale developed by Hilton, early 2000s, which is a binary operator where things are either "hot" or "not."
luxalptraum.com
Adding my ancient take on this, which apparently only lives on Mastodon now (toot toot)
Look Fahrenheit has a lot of problems but you gotta respect a system that’s based on the logic of “100 hots? That’s too hot. 0 hots? That’s too cold.” -17.8 to 37.8 just doesn’t have the same finesse.

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons: "If you look before January 20, and even after January 20, the men & women of ICE did not have to have masks on their face. Me personally, I don't want those officers having to wear masks bc it's hot, it's dangerous. But ICE agents are being doxxed at a horrible rate"

I needed to read this today. Thought someone else might need it too.
A screenshot of a post previously from Greenpeace. It’s a photo of a blue fence with black writing on top. The writing says:
‘If you ever feel heavy because you care deeply about injustice, suffering and ecological destruction. Remember that’s trillion dollar propaganda machine was built to make you numb and it didn’t work on you. ‘

Murder puddle.

...that's a pretty good band name.
About 5 black crows together in a puddle.

A good way to avoid a "costly, unnecessary, and avoidable conflict" is to… not start one.

It's infuriating so many Democrats can't make this very obvious logical jump in their reactions.

Senate Intel Vice Chair Mark Warner:

"The president must come before Congress immediately to articulate clear strategic objectives and lay out how he plans to protect American lives and ensure we are not once again drawn into a costly, unnecessary, and avoidable conflict."

The United States never has enough money to keep people alive at home but always has enough money to kill people overseas.

You need an eraser this big when you play "The Search for Planet X" the way I do 🤣😭

(Great, fun, nearly infinitely replayable puzzle/strategy/logic rule board game if you're looking for one, with a lot of different difficulty levels available!)
A game board is laid out for "the search for planet X board game, which includes an 18-dector map showing all the possibilities, spaces to write down information as you solve puzzles, a number of pieces for different planets/celestial objects, and a rotating game board that shows the "visible sky."

On top of it all, is a huge green pencil Eraser with the words "For Big Mistakes" written on it.

The Onion has sent the following letter to all 535 members of Congress. This special edition will be in their physical mailboxes as they return from recess tomorrow.

We hope it inspires them to continue to cower as our essential liberties are systematically dismantled.

Congress, Now More Than Ever, Our Nation Needs Your Cowardice
Published:

June 20, 2025
Who will stand up for our democracy? This question, fraught in even the most peaceful times, has only grown more pressing as our country approaches its 250th anniversary. Each passing day brings growing assaults on essential liberties like freedom of speech and due process. Meanwhile, our delicately assembled legal system faces a constant barrage of threats. Even as this issue reaches publication, the U.S. military has been deployed against peaceful protestors. We teeter on the brink of collapse into an authoritarian state. That is why, today, The Onion calls upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing.

Members of Congress—now, more than ever, our nation desperately needs your cowardice.

Donald Trump just unilaterally bombed Iran. A masked gang is terrorizing our streets. America has rapidly devolved into an authoritarian state.

That's why, today, The Onion has purchased a full page ad in today's New York Times with a simple plea to Congress:

Sit back and do absolutely nothing.
An Onion front page with the headline: Congress, Now More Than Ever, Our Nation Needs Your Cowardice

Who will stand up for our democracy? This
question, fraught in even the most peaceful
times, has only grown more pressing as our
country approaches its 250th anniversary.
Each passing day brings growing assaults on
essential liberties like freedom of speech and due process.
Meanwhile, our delicately assembled legal system faces
a constant barrage of threats. Even as this issue reaches
publication, the U.S. military has been deployed against
peaceful protesters. We teeter on the brink of collapse into
an authoritarian state. That is why, today, The Onion calls
upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing.
Members of Congress, now more than ever, our nation
desperately needs your cowardice.
Our republic is a birthright, an exceedingly rare treasure
passed down from generation to generation of Americans. It
was gained through hard years of bloody resistance and can
too easily be lost. Our Founding Fathers, in their abundant
wisdom, understood that all it would take was men and
women of little courage sitting in the corridors of power
and taking zero action as this precious inheritance was
stripped away—and that is where we have finally arrived.
Now is not the time for bravery or valor! This is the time
for protecting your own hide and lining your pocket. Now is
not the time for listening to your idiotic constituents drone
on about what’s happening to their precious democracy.
This is the time for getting down on all fours and grov-
eling. Now is not the time to say, “Enough is enough,” and
have the tough conversations about resisting the ongoing
assaults on American liberty. This is the time to let the wave
of apathy and indifference roll over you as you think about
getting a really nice renovation to your house in Kalorama.
But what can I, one coward, do alone? you might ask.

Good article talking about the story and some of the lasting legacy of the May 18th, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

The consequences of one eruption weren't just the day of, but have persisted for decades - something we will all need to keep in mind for future eruptions.

How Mount St. Helens eruption still impacts local waterways decades later
When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, the blast released 3.3 billion cubic yards of earth from the mountain.

If you made it through that, here's the culprit, using a fort as a pillow rather than making a pillow fort.

Happy #Caturday!

When you have a long-haired cat, and you haven't furminated in a while, then get paid out in huge layers of thick hair, is that de-furred compensation?

Also, I just discovered Bluesky now allows videos (like this one) that are longer than 60 seconds 🎉
New video length limit is 3 minutes.

"Solo Leveling" so far was just a show about whether "LEEEEEROOOOY JENKINS!" was in fact a good idea.

...and also a power fantasy.

...and also somehow enjoyable to watch and makes the viewer curious about what happens next?

It feels weird to me that we're supposed to call our representatives to be like: "Hey can we not initiate another forever war?" You'd think they'd be able to handle that one without a ton of input.
