Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate hearing from you.
ICE plays a critical role in enforcing federal immigration law by identifying, detaining, and removing criminal [offensive term for non-documented immigrants] who pose a threat to public safety. This work is often complex and dangerous, and ICE officers regularly operate in challenging environments to uphold the rule of law and protect our communities.
As a strong supporter of our men and women in law enforcement, I believe that when officers are required to use force in the course of their duties, these situations must be approached with seriousness and restraint. Such incidents carry lasting consequences for everyone involved and warrant thorough, fact-based review to ensure accountability and fairness. Too often, judgments are made before all the facts are known, which undermines due process and the integrity of law enforcement.
That said, regardless of one’s views on immigration policy, no one should interfere with or impede law enforcement officers as they carry out their lawful responsibilities. ICE officers, like all law enforcement professionals, deserve to do their jobs safely and without obstruction. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over these issues, please know that I will keep your views in mind.
