Had a book published before mid-2021? Take 5 minutes to see if it's listed here and if so another 5 to enter info. And look up your grandma's book, the book of your friend, etc. and let them know

But my good trick-or-treater, do we put on such costumes because this night is spooky, or is the night spooky because put on such costumes?

Have you been bereft without MLGB3? It was the essential and much-used online listing of extant books from British medieval libraries. Those good people @bodleian.ox.ac.uk have been working away and have just re-launched it, with the promise of more in the year ahead:

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

The yearly update of the Supplementa tertia (v. 6.7) is out! Additions and corrections to the three published volumes of Aristoteles Latinus Codices, with plenty of hyperlinks to digital images! If you know or own other MSS of the medieval Latin Aristotle, please reach out!

Booklist found in a will from 837 CE. Kind of notable that the daughters are all given books (the sons too, though that's less notable).

I've gotta say, it would be hard to live up to a name like Exsuperius.

Not gonna lie-- catching news like this is one of the main benefits of bluesky for me.

I started teaching Aristotle's Ethica Nicomachea in Greek last week with the usual complaint about the lacking quality of Bywater's 19th-c OCT edition. Turns out that a new one came out this year, over 1000 pages in OA! Bound to be an improvement!

Poster's madness? More like imPOSTER syndrome!

if you can look at it without catching poster’s madness, the list of who actually gets engagement here is pretty interesting. somewhat dire at the top but quickly it’s real and high quality posters.

In one of my classes we were just talking about the bit of Exodus where the Israelites were worshipping the golden calf. (There had been an allusion to it in a text we're reading.) Anyways, apropos of nothing, several different companies are now offering an AI Jesus:

I have deleted my account using this workaround.

Potential workaround if you're already logged in and get prompted by the ToS notification: opening this "privacy policy" link www.academia.edu/privacytakes you to a page where you can access the drop-down menu and reach "account settings." From there I was able to delete my account without agreeing.

Granted, many of the academic publishers were themselves loathsome, and their business model was poaching money from universities and labor from scholars. 3/4

I had thought of academia[dot]edu as a place to share scholarship with people who didn't have access. But ultimately it was a for-profit company, whose business model was to poach profits from academic publishers. 2/4

Deleted my academia[dot]edu account, which I should have done years ago.
