Hi I’m Sean! 👋 I’m a remote-worker tech generalist with a focus on cybersecurity and ops of web SaaS companies. I’ve been in this industry in some form for 20 years. I also post about politics and DIY engineering projects. My dream encore career is developing a mentor/apprentice model for tech.

Hello weather being, what sort of weather is all the sparkles on massachusetts and rhode island before the blobs get there?

In my head it’s “we are how we act in private”

if you’re is a cruel piece of shit when no one is watching, then you’re a cruel piece of shit, and your behavior in public is just masking.

And age will turn that sort of person into a miserable husk

I think this is a really salient point that’s a key thing that gets overlooked as an element of what might be necessary to embrace if we’re going to be able to get out of this.

One reason former Republicans have been better at opposing Trump than many progressives is because they correctly understand that the GOP’s descent into fascism represents a dramatic shift, and is therefore scarier, where the latter groups feel the need to argue it’s just a continuation of trend

This is an actual visual map of the Circular Vendor Ponzi laid out by @anthonycr.bsky.social

We're in the phase where they are making sure that none of the nodes die, but it is becoming increasingly thinly stretched

It's likely in the terminal phase. If one of these faulters, the whole thing pops

Dell, Nvidia, Supermicro, Lambda, Coreweave, Crusce, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Oracle all buyuing from and selling to each other with no arrows leaving the map.

I have 3 axioms that help me decide when to talk to people I disagree with:

1. To debate a subject is to concede that the subject is debatable.

2. To reason with a person is to concede that the person is reasonable.

3. To ask for evidence of a claim is to concede that the claim might be true.

i made a template you can use to think about what "frame/negation/kirby" looks like for other issues.
For example:

Frame: DOGE is a govt efficiency project to save $

Negation: Actually it made things less efficient and cost $

Kirby: DOGE was a project to break and privatize federal bureaucracy
Top is an empty rectangle with a jagged line in the middle.
The left side is labeled "Frame" "F is happening!"
The right side is labeled "Negation" "F is not true!"
Below is a large image of Kirby, a round pink blob with eyes with a small version of the Frame F shape flying into his mouth. To the right is a large pink rectangle labeled "Kirby" "K is happening, that's why they're saying F"
tilmonedwards.com
Kirbying is the hard counter to presupposing a frame.
anthonymoser.com
Frame: this public service costs too much, it isn't making money

Negation: it's actually very efficient and it could make more money

Kirby: they are attacking the very idea of public services
tpshea.bsky.social
And yet here we are. The Postal Workers union needs to Kirby the frame they're being trapped in.

They don't need to make the case that there is a path to profitability.

“Effective LLM use is metaprogramming for wordcels and that’s why almost nobody is doing it: because they either don’t know metaprogramming or they are not wordcels”

a sentence I just uttered at work, help
tilmonedwards.com
lmao yeah exactly. It’s not worth anyone’s breath to say “vaccines will not turn you into a crocodile” - the Kirby response is to say “Bolsonaro is flooding the zone with shit”

“The earth is flat” vs. “the earth is round” is just 2 people disagreeing about worldview.

“The earth is flat” vs. “stop wasting my time” is a flat earther idiot wasting someone’s time.

Basically, they want to get you to agree that a scientific consensus is just a matter of opinion. If they can do that, then all of reality is just another opinion, and they can use power to do whatever they want.

Thanks, it’s helpful to learn how rhetoric is used in other countries. The thing that happens in the US is that people will say ridiculous things under the guise of “different opinions” or “just asking questions” because they want to bring those topics into polite conversation.

I intentionally didn’t give any specific examples of actual issues because I didn’t want to invite debate about them.

💯 If we only do things that our elders give us permission to do, our lives will be smaller than theirs were. We can respect our elders while still defying their wishes. One cannot wait for their parents’ permission to grow up.
