Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Kemi Badenoch claiming Terry Pratchett as her favourite author is wild

If we never give anyone a chance, then yes, they can't disappoint us. But they also can't rise to the occasion.

He's definitely growing on me.

Many of us know only too well the family member who's always been BNP-adjacent. The ex-Tory who votes Farage, these aren't nice, amenable people. They aren't people you want to live around and try to convince.
@flyingrodent.bsky.social summed this up well

I always love it when people get up on their high horse about this, because I do know lots of people who were Tories for decades and are now Reform and let me tell you, getting to know them is a highly instructive and helpful experience with many useful lessons. Give me a minute here.

It's got to the stage where if 'you don't know anyone whose voting for Reform' you need to broaden your social circle.
Or, perhaps, reflect on what it is about your behaviour that means your friends don't feel able to be open with you about politics.
timblue.bsky.social
Labour's current messaging:

"Farage is right about everything, but vote for us anyway".

It's so monumentally stupid that everyone involved with it should never be allowed to run anything, ever.

And instead, we're stuck with spineless idiots while racists and bootlickers take over the country.
timblue.bsky.social
No. They're offering Reform-lite, not full-fat Reform. They aren't going to strip ILR... but they are going to do a speech demonising people with it.

Well, guess what. Those people who want Reform will just vote Reform.

And decent people who don't want any flabour of Reform will find alternatives.
timblue.bsky.social
Erm. We've all watched Labour do it, Marlowe.

Why do you think Labour support is diminishing by the day?
timblue.bsky.social
It's nice to see someone stick to their principles. 🙂

Reading this thread might be instructive to some of your fellow Guardian reporters.

I used to pay money to support The Guardian every month, and I had to stop since I won't fund blatant transphobia.

You could try apologising and learn instead of doubling down. 🤣

I'm very concerned about all the #GlobalSumudFlotilla detainees, but especially Hannah Schafer, who seems likely to be held in extended detention in Israel. Israeli armed forces have committed grave and multiple breaches of international law in attacking the flotilla and mistreating its crew.

To be clear @peterwalker99.bsky.social no one cheers an awful policy announcement that makes anyone in our community feel less welcome or at risk of deportation.

What is true is that the Tory party is dead and that the Lib Dems will always stand up for our incredible immigrant communities.
peterwalker99.bsky.social
Yet again, a distant but heartfelt cheer can be heard from Lib Dem activists in Blue Wall seats.

Thanks, but no need.

I hereby release it to the public domain with one restriction (see below) and encourage others to improve on it.

Attribution is entirely optional.

The only restriction is that it not be modified for use with racist or divisive purposes.

It is a joint statement from the Board of Deputies and the JLC. Its sad something like this needed to be said on the first Sabbath after Thursday but many people from every faith & none will be glad to see the clarity with which this longstanding position has been reiterated, and so can amplify it

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

I'm not.

I'm making it about the tactics used by Israel and its supporters to turn all Jews worldwide into human shields.

I just drew this to try to show what I think I'm seeing.

It's similar to what I saw happen to trans people.

Bad actors amplify extremists and make sure that opposing extremists are what you see.

This sets up everyone for conflict, not dialogue and understanding, should reasonable people meet.
Critize Israel's Genocide
Get called an antisemite.

>

Weaponized accusations
Israel and its allies run a deliberate campaign to link Jewish people and Israel, and to dismiss any criticism of Israel as antisemitism.

>

Genuine Antisemites
See the opportunity to attack Jews under the cover of the widespread outrage about Israel.

>

Jews see attacks from antisemites
Jews are told that all protests against the genocide are antisemitic by highlighting of specific incidents.

>

Jews feel threatened
Jewish communities post about the antisemitic attacks they are seeing.
People who have been called antisemitic just for opposing the genocide feel attacked by those posts.

> Return to step 1
timblue.bsky.social
I post anything about the atrocities committed by Israel, and I get people screaming at me that I'm an antisemite.

In that sort of climate, genuine antisemites feel free to act knowing their actions will get lost in the noise.

And the world keeps descending deeper into shit.

The thing I respect about Greta Thunberg is that she understands most people in the Western world don’t give a shit about atrocities until someone white is affected.

So she’s doing what needs to be done to keep up the pressure.

If more white folks followed that example, we’d all be fine.

Who could ever have imagined when I played a fictional rebel who joined the Resistance to oppose a criminal Authoritarian & wannabe King, it would be happening in real-life?

I just watched @zackpolanski.bsky.social 's brilliant speech.

I'm glad to see that a bunch of TV channels actually broadcast it as well.

It's well worth a watch. An important message for everyone to hear.
