“One of the things that is most outrageous is the idea that DOGE and the Trump administration were eliminating or dramatically reducing humanitarian aid on the basis of efficiency and waste,” @nickkristof.bsky.social said in response to USAID cuts. “What they have created is waste and inefficiency.”
Bearing witness to the harm caused by Trump clawing back billions in foreign aid
Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the New York Times, says the Trump administration has created “waste and inefficiency” through dismantling USAID, the exact opposite of its intended goal. “I'm just back from East Africa,” he said. “And what I saw was children dying all over from these preventable diseases, of malaria, of infections, of malnutrition.” He points out that when we let things like this fester abroad, they will inevitably become an issue within the U.S., where it’s exponentially more expensive to treat. He uses tuberculous as an example, a disease fairly inexpensive to treat abroad, yet it can cost up to a half million dollars to treat a single antibiotic resistant case in the U.S.

Vaccines not only save lives, they save money.

Paying a hospital bill for what should have been an avoidable illness could bankrupt families and cost the government billions.

Vaccines work and are a cost-effective investment.

1. Trump threatened every hospital that provides gender affirming care to transgender youth.

Many complied and shut down their programs.

Boston Children's Hospital didn't. They fought back and kept providing care.

And now, they just beat Trump in court.

Interesting analysis. @jamellebouie.net wonders if Russ Vought hates NIH because science proved itself stronger than his far-right religious power system.

Vought’s daughter had a terrible disease.

Vought could not cure her or make her physical symptoms better. But science, and NIH, did that.
one of the most interesting facts about russ vought’s life, to me, is that NIH research is the reason his daughter had access to life changing drug to treat her cystic fibrosis. vought, of course, is the architect of the administration’s war on science. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/14/m...

It’s a dark day in U.S. foreign policy as the Trump admin completes its illegal dismantling of USAID.

The dedicated men and women of USAID have set a shining example across the globe.

As this report shows, these cuts will have deadly consequences — and Trump and Rubio are responsible.
USAID cuts could lead to 14 million deaths over the next five years, researchers say
An analysis published Monday in the medical journal The Lancet projects that cuts to the agency will lead to more deaths from diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
