The linear extrapolation of the past 15 years and the nonlinear 30-year extrapolation now both put global warming at +1.54°C above 1850-1900.

Reaching +2°C in 2037 or 2034.

I've tried and failed a couple times to write a post explaining how serious this would be. NCAR is globally essential to our climate change response. This can't just be replaced. Every scientist in the world will be doing climate research with one hand tied behind their back for at least a decade
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Trump's evisceration of US regulatory agencies will hit Canadians hard. Carney's cuts to state capacity are the exact opposite of what he should be doing to strengthen Canada.
We need more -- much more -- regulatory capacity, not less.
New from me: It will be more difficult for Canada to track diseases, food borne illnesses & side effects from pharmaceuticals with the US govt's dismantling of its regulatory agencies. PM Carney's cuts to the federal govt are coming at a time of crisis.

Given that the only thing that has ever led to climate progress was the global wave of alarm that rose in the wake of *The Uninhabitable Earth* and the IPCC Special Report of 1.5 C, I think it is irresponsible and counterproductive to downplay how much danger we’re in.

I wish the "He's just playing 4D chess" folks understood that, even if that were the case (it isn't), it means he's being dishonest with almost everyone he deals with.
This point is disturbing: Guilbeault "was also deeply troubled by the ease with which the PMO was casting aside its moral obligation to May. What was the Liberals’ word worth?"
Mark Carney seems to have forgotten the first rule of central banking: Your word, your credibility, is all.
Good work by @althiaraj.bsky.social on the inside story of Guilbeault's resignation, from his being frozen out by PMO, given false assurances, and being made to wear the government walking back on pledges he made to Elizabeth May to secure her support. No kidding it was untenable for him to stay.

I'm not interested in "I told you so."

A lot of people voted Liberal because they were terrified of Poilievre and his gang. I get that.

But Carney's who we got, he's being a weak leader, pushing policies that are harming the vast majority of us and it's time to just admit he sucks and push back.

The final agreement from COP30 doesn't mention fossil fuels, argues we are only 80% of the way to 1.5C, sets out an insane timeline of GHG reductions, and mentions 'a rapidly narrowing window.'

The COP is dead and burried. And COP30 was the final nail.

"Simply repeating “productivity”/”nation-building” isn’t enough. There are many ways to improve productivity and to build a nation. Why these choices and not others?
Canadians are owed explanations and a debate over alternatives. Esp when youth and the most vulnerable are being asked to “sacrifice.”
Canadians shouldn’t have to resort to guessing about the main element of Mark Carney’s entire policy agenda.
It is fundamentally offensive, and antithetical to good governance and sound policymaking, that Carney is leaving everyone to guess why he’s doing what he’s doing.
