How bad will it be? Catastrophic.

Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.

But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.

Speak up now before it is too late.

NSF Physics was cut by 85%, basically wiping out most of its capacity for supporting research.

NSF Astronomy was cut by 53%

Undergrad education was cut by 71% and research on learning by 79%

Graduate education was cut by 100% to ZERO.

Trump Has Cut Science Funding to Its Lowest Level in Decades (Gift Article)
The lag in funding extends far beyond D.E.I. initiatives, affecting almost every area of science: chemistry, computing, engineering, materials and more.

Grad school admissions in physics and astro are severely contracted rn because of funding uncertainty. Departments that should know better are using undergrad publications to narrow down the applicant pool. This is grossly unfair and has more to do with avoiding hard work than assessing applicants.

This would essentially be the end of American astronomy; like at this point (especially if Roman/other missions get killed) I either find a new job or find a new country.
First the rumour was a 20% budget cut. Then, 50%. Now the president's NASA budget is out and it's a 68% cut to astrophysics ($1.5B to $487M).

Even if this gets reversed in four years, we will *never* recover the missions, partners, people who will be gone.

Massive cuts to NASA science proposed in early White House budget plan
The preliminary version of President Donald Trump’s budget proposal to Congress, known as a “passback,” would cut the agency’s science budget funding nearly in half.

This is SUCH bullshit - so so frustrating that even factual phrases like "Science is still a male-dominated field" now have to be scrubbed from anything federally funded... 🔭

As scientists, we now have even more responsibility to be loud supporters & allies of diversity in science. 🔭

It also honors the legacy of Rubin, who was a tremendous astronomer who missed out on a Nobel because of sexism. She would be furious; and we need to be taking action

LIGO can detect events that alter its mirrors by as small as 1/10,000th the width of a proton. the only equipment more sensitive than this is the recoil instinct of a woman in science when a colleague is hitting on her.
