I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Not all of it has aged well, but so much of it is wonderful.

CW: Violence (driver hitting a teenage girl), but if you're in Alberta, give this a look and see if you recognize anything. Folks in the thread say this is near a school, and this guy plowed into a kid in a crosswalk.
robsonfletcher.com
Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Oh lordy. I heard these stories from various people involved. If you want to work in TV, or just are curious about how thoroughly things can go wrong, definitely check this out.

How could a straight-to-series greenlight go so wrong for the first TV series I ever created?! Today, the 5AM StoryTalk Podcast brings you Part 1 of a four-part Hollywood horror story I describe as a cautionary tale for screenwriters about what can happen when all your dreams come true.

The JADE CITY ebook is an Amazon Prime Day deal today (Tuesday) for a ludicrously low $2.99 which is much less than what I paid for boba tea yesterday so if you still haven't jumped on the Green Bone Saga bandwagon, this is your sign👇

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

this site has done so many things right when it comes to building tools that allow us to escape some of the worst parts of twitter. I legitimately admire many of the technological choices they've made.

but for the love of god, EVERYTHING IN THIS THREAD. go get a communications team!!!!!

eventually politicians need to start advocating for criminal and civil penalties for people involved in fabricating stories to get citizens incarcerated.

or, put another way: a society that would like to keep functioning has to discourage baldfaced lying, especially by authorities

This is why I keep saying we must never forget and never forgive the people who did this to us.

We have to learn from the failure of Reconstruction, and punish them, so it never happens again. We can't let them just move on, and pretend that they never did any of this.

We don't, there will be a new (and hopefully better) normal after this, that said, for the rest of our lives we'll have to be aware a non-trivial number of neighbors and fellows voted for actual fascism, and that's always going to be a bummer

How do we return to any semblance of normal after all this is said and done?

YES! like, do you want us to fight using every fucking tool we can put our hands on or not??

If we need to learn one thing from the damn GOP, it is their pathological willingness to go "well that didn't work, who has an even weirder idea let's fuckin go"

Apropos nothing in particular, even though I don’t drink tea, I love @courtneymilan.com’s newsletter on tea and her life and her books. she writes smart stuff, and more people should read it. (And she should put the tip jar in the next one.)

Tried kombucha because I heard it was good for gut health, and also the store had brands that made it taste like not just black/green tea, which is not usually my thing.

It still apparently has enough caffeine to make my teeth chatter, though.

i think it’s actually completely okay to say an algorithm is not a real person
hailey @hailey.at
if you're writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go "oh that's fine to say because it's not a real person" (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

I do have other Thoughts™, but they can wait for another time.

If there's any takeaway, it's this:

Yeah, transition is scary, especially right now, and medical transition does incur social risks. I knew that going in.

It's still the most worthwhile thing I've ever done for myself.
