As I recently explained to a friend, I believe that retention is a larger problem than recruitment. Many people want to be teachers, but burnout and other factors make it hard to stay.
This piece doesn’t discuss it, but we also need better representation.

Read more than expected last year, but the TBR is never depleted. Here's the pretties that are currently in my future. Any suggestions on what should top the list?

I just got an email saying B&N is offering 25% off everything in store for like 2 days? I'm just saying, if you got a gift card, THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS happens to be the perfect New Year's Eve read (sapphic murder time loop at a fancy NYE party starring a very tired but badass new mom)

Next set from the Okanagan Spirits whiskey advent calendar! Professor's Plum is definitely the winner so far.

Late to posting, but this year's advent calendar is from Okanagan Spirits, a Canadian distillery. Whiskey in all its delicious forms. The first four bottles covered the basics and they were all lovely ❤️

I was delighted to see TLHBW in this advent thread, but then I scrolled up to see what other books were there, and enough of them were huge favorites of mine that now I really need to check out the others as well...👀
Today's paperback of the year advent is The Last Hour Between Worlds by @melissacaruso.bsky.social: people are falling through boundaries between realities; a party goes awry; and our MC, a new single parent, is thrown into the action to save everything.

Fast paced, queer, murder, time travel!

I’ve got 18 days to finish this novel (near future climate thriller w weather-controlling corps, extinctionist cults, fanatical stormchasers, and some righteous ecoterrorists) so I’m taking a social media break until the new year. Enjoy the holidays! See you in 2026!

While Amazon is investing billions of dollars to expand AI, independent bookstores are hosting community events, personally recommending books to readers, and providing a space that is safe and welcoming during a time when we need them most.

Never underestimate the power of a local bookstore.

Such a fantastic book! And there's already a sequel.
So THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS makes a good gift for those who like:

Time loops
Sapphics with swords
Locked room murder mystery
Badass but tired mom MCs
Swordfighting in ballgowns

Also a good gift because:

Takes place at a fancy New Year's party (seasonal!)

42 days, 13 books 📚 read, 80,000 ✍️words written, 3745 Lego 🏰 pieces assembled, 2 seasons of Outlander and 4 seasons of Spartacus watched 📺, a painfully boring number of laps 🚶‍♀️around my living room and... it's time to go back to work. Well, it was fun (and painful) while it lasted.

And thus ends the recovery read-a-thon. 13 books in 40 days. I wish I could pick a favourite but there are so many amazing ones, all for different reasons. Now, if only I could find the time to read so much without needing surgery first 😅

A great way to end my read-a-thon (apparently after surgery they expect you to eventually go back to work 🙄). If you haven't checked out The Illuminae Files, you should!

Remember, without retail staff you'd have nothing but bad signage, messy aisles, malfunctioning search terminals and obnoxious auto checkouts. They work very hard for very little. Be kind.
Happy First Saturday in December to all who celebrate! Be nice to your retail workers. Wish them comfortable shoes!

100%

I spent five years recovering from a concussion and being told I looked fine. That's the point. When it's bad, you don't want anyone to see.
You can’t tell if someone is disabled just by looking at them.

There’s no such thing as the “genuinely disabled”.

You are not entitled to a person’s entire medical history just so you can decide whether to believe them or not.

People are not faking disability, most are trying to fake being well.
